Expanding the allergen repertoire of salmon and catfish

Thimo Ruethers et al.

Summary: This study investigated the allergen repertoire of two highly farmed fish species, demonstrating IgE-binding to fish tropomyosins and TPIs for the first time in a large patient cohort. Tropomyosins, along with parvalbumins, should be considered for improved fish allergy diagnostics.

Allergenicity Assessment of Novel Food Proteins: What Should Be Improved?

Antonio Fernandez et al.

Summary: Allergenicity prediction is a challenging aspect in the safety assessment of foods, and a bottom-up strategy can be used to define specific risk assessment needs based on a appropriately built database for this purpose.

Evaluating potential risks of food allergy of novel food sources based on comparison of proteins predicted from genomes and compared to www.AllergenOnline.org

Mohamed Abdelmoteleb et al.

Summary: Potential proteins from three novel food sources were predicted and evaluated for allergic cross-reactivity risks by comparing amino acid sequences against allergens in the AOL database. Despite many proteins exceeding CODEX limits for identity matches, these matches were not predictive of allergy risks based on observed taxonomic cross-reactivity. New methods or changes in allergen databases are recommended for better risk evaluation.

Advances in epitope mapping technologies for food protein allergens: A review

Fanlin Zhou et al.

Summary: This article systematically reviews the research progress and development trend of food epitope mapping technology, providing a reference for the identification and characterization of food allergens. Novel technologies have advantages in specificity, sensitivity, accuracy, and throughput, but there is still work needed for invention of new mapping technology, establishment of databases, and development of allergic omics.
