From a single steroid to the steroidome: Trends and analytical challenges

Eulalia Olesti et al.

Summary: Steroid analysis has become a crucial tool in diagnosing and monitoring endocrine pathologies, with methods evolving rapidly to monitor large sets of steroids in biological matrices. Liquid chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry is the preferred technique due to its sensitivity and robustness, but challenges like dynamic range, low natural abundance, selectivity, extraction protocols, and ionization remain. Availability of steroid standards, complementary analytical strategies, and improved calibration approaches are crucial for complete steroidome quantification.
