The development of nanomaterials has enabled the transformation of materials at the nanoscale level. Although there are promising materials with electrical, physical, and mechanical properties, their inability to distinguish between semiconducting and metallic phases has limited their potential in electronics. However, molybdenum disulfide, with its versatile properties, has been widely used in various organic syntheses for applications such as desulfurization, denitrogenation, reduction, heterocycle synthesis, and photocatalysis.
Transforming the shape, structure, and morphology of materials at the nanoscale level has been made possible by the development of nanomaterials. Even though promising materials for electrical, physical, and mechanical properties exist, however their inability to distinguish between semiconducting and metallic phases has resulted in its demise as a promising material for electronics of 2-D materials, which includes graphene, black phosphorous, boron nitrides and transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs). Moreover, molybdenum disulfide is regarded as a multi-utility and multi-functional material due to its ability to show different properties. Due to the astonishing properties of MoS2 and synergetic effects it has been wielded for a wide range of applications. This review focuses on the utility of molybdenum disulfide in various organic syntheses. Bulk MoS2, chemically exfoliated MoS2, nanosheets, metal-doped MoS2, and MoS2 composites are the main focus of the report. They can be used for hydrodesulfurization, hydrodenitrogenation, reduction, synthesis of heterocycles and photocatalysis, as well as some chemical reactions.
