Effect of Cu on the strengthening and embrittling of an FeCoNiCr-xCu HEA

Chengchao Du et al.

Summary: The effect of Cu concentration on the microstructure and mechanical properties of FeCoNiCr-xCu HEAs was studied. Low Cu concentrations contributed to solid solution strengthening, while higher concentrations led to the precipitation of nano Cu-rich particles which increased strength. However, excessive Cu concentration resulted in the formation of a weak continuous Cu-rich phase, leading to decreased strength and elongation.

Summary: The study combined laser cladding technology with ultrasound to improve the performance of formed metal parts. Experimental results showed that applying ultrasonic vibration resulted in finer grain size and significant changes in precipitate phase structure and chemical composition. High-frequency vibration was found to effectively reduce porosity, improve microhardness, and enhance wear resistance in the cladding layer.

The friction and wear behavior of laser textured surfaces in non-conformal contact under starved lubrication

Yixu Niu et al.

Summary: The study investigated the main factors influencing the friction and wear properties of steel surfaces under non-conformal contact in starved lubricated conditions, showing that the depth of dimples significantly affects these properties, with the best performance achieved for surfaces textured at a depth of 10 μm, an area density of 10%, and a diameter of 100 μm. Additionally, the friction coefficient exhibited distinct characteristics in different friction and wear stages, delineated as steady-state, variation-state, and dry-friction stages. Surfaces with optimal textured depths effectively prolonged the steady-state and reduced friction and wear during the variation-state, resulting in longer sliding distances in starved lubrication.

Improving surface properties of Fe-based laser cladding coating deposited on a carbon steel by heat assisted ultrasonic burnishing

Changsheng Zhang et al.

Summary: In this study, a combination of ultrasonic burnishing and heat treatment was applied to a laser cladded Fe-based coating, with the UWB/HT process showing the best improvement in surface properties. The UWB/HT process reduced roughness and porosity, increased hardness, improved residual stress and microstructure, and exhibited the best wear resistance in the Fe-based coating. This approach has the greatest potential to effectively treat laser cladding and enhance surface properties, especially for high-demand products in harsh conditions.

In suit monitoring of solidification mode, porosity and clad height during laser metal deposition of AISI 316 stainless steel

Yi Lu et al.

Summary: The study successfully monitored solidification modes, random pore defects, and deposition height in the laser metal deposition process using laser-induced plasma signals. By extracting spectral lines of elements and developing relationships between pore positions and statistical features of the spectrum signal, the study was able to predict solidification modes and detect abnormal height changes during manufacturing. Additionally, linear relationships between electron density, signal mean intensity, and deposition height were identified, providing valuable insights for process control.
