Effects of conventional shot peening, severe shot peening, re-shot peening and precised grinding operations on fatigue performance of AISI 1050 railway axle steel

Okan Unal et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of different treatment methods on AISI 1050 material and found that two-stage operations can achieve high residual stress depth and magnitude on the surface. Grinding and re-shot peening treatments can significantly reduce surface roughness, and increasing shot peening intensity can greatly improve hardness.

Fatigue life extension of additively manufactured Nickel-base 718 alloy by nanostructured surface

Ruslan M. Karimbaev et al.

Summary: The beneficial effect of ultrasonic nanocrystal surface modification (UNSM) treatment on the mechanical properties and fatigue performance of Nickel-base 718 alloy fabricated by laser directed energy deposition (LDED) process was investigated in this study. The treatment demonstrated a significant enhancement in fatigue performance by introducing high compressive residual stress (CRS) and generating a nanostructured surface layer. Additionally, it was found that surface roughness decreased and hardness increased after the treatment.

Effects of laser shock peening on microstructure and mechanical properties of TIG welded alloy 600 joints

Zhandong Wan et al.

Summary: Laser shock peening (LSP) is an effective surface strengthening technology for post-weld treatment, enhancing mechanical properties such as microhardness and dislocation density. While peening on the full gauge part of welded joints improves tensile strength and yield strength, better fatigue life improvement is achieved by peening only on the fusion zone and heat affected zone.

Surface roughness effect on fatigue strength of aluminum alloy using revised stress field intensity approach

Bingfeng Zhao et al.

Summary: The study investigated the physical mechanisms of surface roughness effect in different regions through fatigue testing of 7N01 aluminum alloy, and proposed a revised stress field intensity approach for fatigue strength assessment of microsized notches. The new model overcame the limitations of traditional methods, providing accurate and objective calculation of stress field strength. Results showed satisfactory accuracy of the revised approach in quantitative analysis compared to traditional methods.
