Emotion regulation strategies moderate the impact of negative affect induction on alcohol craving in college drinkers: an experimental paradigm

Dokyoung S. You et al.

Summary: This laboratory study examined the impact of trait emotion regulation strategies on alcohol craving in college drinkers. The findings suggest that greater use of drinking to cope and less use of cognitive reappraisal predicted higher alcohol craving after negative affect induction. However, emotion suppression did not predict alcohol craving in either condition.

Higher Emotion Dysregulation and Coping Motives in Alcoholand Marijuana Users

Heather R. Lucke et al.

Summary: Previous research suggests that difficulties in emotion regulation may lead individuals to use substances like alcohol and marijuana to cope with negative emotions. Coping motives were found to be the main intermediary between emotion dysregulation and alcohol/marijuana-related outcomes, with enhancement motives being specific to the relationship between emotion dysregulation and alcohol consumption in the alcohol-only group. Individuals higher in emotion dysregulation are more likely to use alcohol or marijuana for coping purposes and may benefit from interventions aimed at improving emotion regulation skills.

Relations between impulsive personality traits, alcohol and cannabis co-use, and negative alcohol consequences: A test of cognitive and behavioral mediators

Jack T. Waddell et al.

Summary: The study found that impulsive personality traits, particularly sensation seeking, indirectly predicted future negative alcohol consequences through co-use, heavier drinking, and positive expectancies. Lack of premeditation did not predict negative consequences indirectly through co-use, but did so through positive expectancies beyond co-use. Sensation seeking directly predicted negative expectancies, but negative expectancies did not predict negative consequences.
