Identification and Estimation of Treatment and Interference Effects in Observational Studies on Networks

Laura Forastiere et al.

Summary: This article addresses the technical challenges of causal inference on a population of units connected through a network, with a focus on how to handle interference. By proposing new estimands, extending the unconfoundedness assumption, and developing new covariate-adjustment methods, valid estimates of treatment and interference effects in observational studies on networks are achieved. The study also explores the finite-sample performance in different realistic settings using simulations based on friendship networks and covariates in a nationally representative longitudinal study of adolescents in the United States.

Random Forests Approach for Causal Inference with Clustered Observational Data

Youmi Suk et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the use of Causal Forests, a particular machine learning method, to estimate treatment effects in multilevel observational data. Simulation studies show that when supplemented with estimated propensity scores from multilevel models that account for clustered/hierarchical structure, the modified ML method outperforms existing methods in various settings. The paper concludes by estimating the effect of private math lessons in a large-scale educational assessment.

Determination of the optimal number of strata for propensity score subclassification

Summary: Propensity score methods are valuable in observational studies for estimating causal effects. A new method for determining the optimal number of strata for subclassification on the propensity score has been proposed, aiming for optimality in terms of mean squared error.

Matching Methods for Confounder Adjustment: An Addition to the Epidemiologist's Toolbox

Noah Greifer et al.

Summary: Matching methods, as an alternative to propensity score weighting and outcome regression, offer advantages in robustness and performance, and provide researchers with customization options. Unlike weighting methods, matching methods do not directly rely on the propensity score, making them less sensitive to misspecification or extreme values.

Matching Methods for Clustered Observational Studies in Education

Luke Keele et al.

Summary: This article explores the use of multilevel matching methods in educational settings and compares it to multilevel regression modeling. The study finds evidence supporting an analytic approach that combines multilevel matching with regression adjustment for treatment effect estimation. The results suggest that multilevel matching may be effective in making treated and control groups similar in terms of observed characteristics.
