Atractylenolides, essential components of Atractylodes-based traditional herbal medicines: Antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and anticancer properties

Christian Bailly

Summary: The rhizome of Atractylodes macrocephala Koidz, a major constituent of Traditional Chinese Medicine Bai Zhu, contains atractylenolides with antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. These compounds show significant anticancer and immune-modulatory effects, inhibiting cell proliferation, inducing cancer cell death, and potentially reducing side effects of chemotherapy and radiotherapy. Possible mechanisms include inhibition of Janus kinases and involvement of key signaling pathways such as TLR4, NF kappa B and Nrf2. Further research on their metabolism, toxicity and potential in cancer treatment is warranted.

Interaction mechanism between resveratrol and ovalbumin based on fluorescence spectroscopy and molecular dynamic simulation

Weiwei Cheng et al.

Summary: Proteins, especially ovalbumin, can serve as effective carriers for delivering resveratrol. Through fluorescence spectroscopy and molecular dynamic simulation, the interaction mechanism between resveratrol and ovalbumin was investigated, revealing static fluorescence quenching, binding affinity, microenvironment changes, and specific residues involved in the interaction. The study highlights the potential of ovalbumin as a resveratrol delivery system.

Fast identification of the geographical origin of Gastrodia elata using excitation-emission matrix fluorescence and chemometric methods

Wan-Jun Long et al.

Summary: In this study, the geographical origin of Gastrodia elata was identified using fluorescence and chemometric methods. Discriminant models were able to differentiate Gastrodia elata samples from different geographical origins accurately, with the kNN method showing the highest accuracy and reliability. This proposed method presents a promising alternative for determining the geographical origin of traditional Chinese medicines.
