Fluorescence turn-on and turn-off mechanisms of a dual-selective chemosensor of Bi3+ and pH changes: Insights from a theoretical perspective

Manuel A. Treto-Suarez et al.

Summary: The N-hydroxy 1,8-naphthalimide is an optical dual-selective chemosensor for Bi3+ ions and pH changes. The theoretical and computational methodology elucidates the interaction of the sensor with Bi3+ and the emission deactivation at basic pH values. Kinetic analysis provides quantitative predictions for the competition of PET with the radiative process.

A turn-on luminescence probe based on amino-functionalized metal-organic frameworks for the selective detections of Cu2+ , Pb2+ and pyrophosphate

Xuanxuan An et al.

Summary: A turn-on fluorescent probe based on amino-functionalized metal-organic frameworks (MOF-5-NH2) has been developed for the detection of Cu2+, Pb2+, and PPi. The fluorescence emission is controlled by host-guest electron transfer between the analyte and probe, allowing for a switch in the fluorescence signal.

A general strategy to increase emission shift of two-photon ratiometric pH probes using a reversible intramolecular reaction of spiro-oxazolidine

Huamiao Zhang et al.

Summary: A universal strategy for designing pH probes using the pH-dependent reversible intramolecular reaction of spiro-oxazolidine was developed, leading to short emission in basic conditions and significantly red-shifted emission in acidic environments. The emission shift of the probes exceeded 150 nm, with one probe demonstrating a shift of up to 210 nm, outperforming commercial and reported pH probes. The chemical sensing mechanism was confirmed through H-1 NMR spectra and density functional theory calculations, and the probes were successfully used to image lysosomal pH changes in a ratiometric manner.

Yellow emission carbon dots for highly selective and sensitive OFF-ON sensing of ferric and pyrophosphate ions in living cells

Jinyan Du et al.

Summary: A simple OFF-ON fluorescent system based on yellow emission carbon dots (y-CDs) was developed for the sensitive detection of Fe3+ and PPi in living cells. The system showed high selectivity and sensitivity, with the potential for environmental and biological applications. The y-CDs exhibited excitation-independent emission, making it a promising platform for monitoring Fe3+ and PPi variations in organisms.

Summary: A newly designed Schiff base probe JN has been synthesized for highly selective and sensitive detection of Al3+ and PPi ions in aqueous medium. The sensing mechanism of JN towards Al3+ and the detection ability of JN-Al3+ complex towards PPi ions were determined through spectra studies and theory calculations.

Strategy to Synthesize Tunable Multiemission Carbon Dots and Their Multicolor Visualization Application

Panpan Zhu et al.

Summary: Research on multiemission fluorescent carbon dots excited at one wavelength has shown great promise due to their label-free property, easy synthesis, multicolor visualization, and ability to prevent background interference. A new template strategy using fluorescent precursors has been developed for the synthesis of multiemission carbon dots (M-CDs), which show three different emissions attributed to solvent, surface defect, and precursor luminophores. The M-CDs can meet optical requirements by adjusting the amount of NaOH or solvothermal synthesis time, demonstrating better capabilities than previously reported M-CDs. Additionally, a multicolor sensor using M-CDs and rhodamine B has been successfully utilized for cell imaging, showing a color evolution from dark blue to orange based on the pH value of the medium.
