Proton Conductive BaZr0.8-xCexY0.2O3-δ: Influence of NiO Sintering Additive on Crystal Structure, Hydration Behavior, and Conduction Properties

Donglin Han et al.

Summary: The addition of NiO in Y-doped BaZrO3, BaCeO3, and BaZr1-xCexO3 decreases dehydration temperature and proton concentration, leading to reduced ionic conductivity and transport number. This results in worse ion conductivity and brittle electrolyte in Ce-rich samples containing Ni.

Proton-conducting ceramic fuel cells: Scale up and stack integration

Long Q. Le et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the scaling up of proton-conducting ceramic fuel cells (PCFCs) into small, multi-cell stacks with reasonable performance and low degradation through material tuning, fabrication procedures, and operating condition adjustments. Specific materials such as the BCZYYb electrolyte and the BCFZY cathode, as well as packaging with ferritic-steel interconnects and macor frames, contribute to the long-term durability and performance of the fuel cell stacks.

Toward Durable Protonic Ceramic Cells: Hydration-Induced Chemical Expansion Correlates with Symmetry in the Y-Doped BaZrO3-BaCeO3 Solid Solution

Ting Chen et al.

Summary: The study investigates the reduction of chemical strains by lowering symmetry in protonic ceramic electrolysis/fuel cells and finds that B-site substitution can decrease CCEs, providing design principles for rational tailoring of CCEs and materials choice for chemomechanically durable devices. The research validates the hypothesis by measuring reactive oxide uptake and chemical strains under different temperature and humidity conditions, ultimately offering insights into optimizing CCEs and selecting materials for enhanced durability.

Deconvolution of Gas Diffusion Polarization in Ni/Gadolinium-Doped Ceria Fuel Electrodes

C. Grosselindemann et al.

Summary: The deconvolution of physicochemical processes in impedance spectra of SOCs with nickel/ceria fuel electrodes was challenging due to strong overlap of gas diffusion with electrochemical processes. By using symmetrical cells and altering components in fuel gas mixture, an effective gas transport parameter was derived for precise quantification of gas diffusion-related polarization resistances. Model validation in fuel cell and electrolyzer mode showed excellent agreement between measured and simulated current/voltage characteristics under various gas compositions and temperatures.

Effects of NiO addition on sintering and proton uptake of Ba(Zr,Ce,Y)O3-δ

Yuanye Huang et al.

Summary: The effects of adding 0.125-2.0 wt% NiO as a sintering aid for highly refractory Ba(Zr,Ce,Y)O3-delta proton conducting ceramics were investigated. The addition of NiO led to changes in phase evolution, densification kinetics, and proton uptake, with a NiO content of 0.4-0.5 wt% suggested as a balance between the benefits and drawbacks.
