Cotton/halophytes intercropping decreases salt accumulation and improves soil physicochemical properties and crop productivity in saline-alkali soils under mulched drip irrigation: A three-year field experiment

Jiaping Liang et al.

Summary: Soil salinization poses a serious threat to soil quality and sustainable agricultural development in arid and semi-arid regions. This study investigated the effects of a new cotton/halophytes intercropping system on soil salinization and crop production, showing that this system had advantages in salt removal and increasing cotton yield compared to monoculture cotton. The results suggest that the cotton/Suaeda salsa intercropping and cotton/alfalfa intercropping systems could be effective long-term agronomic solutions for improving soil salinization in arid areas.

Strongmitigation of greenhouse gas emission impact via aerobic short pre-digestion of green manure amended soils during rice cropping

Hyeon Ji Song et al.

Summary: Aerobic short pre-digestion of biomass applied soil significantly decreased seasonal methane flux, but had no effect on nitrous oxide emission. As the aerobic pre-digestion days increased, the net ecosystem C balance slightly increased, but was not statistically significant. In conclusion, aerobic short pre-digestion could be a sustainable management practice to decrease greenhouse gas emission impact without changing soil organic carbon stock in temperate rice paddy field.

Planting practices and mulching materials improve maize net ecosystem C budget, global warming potential and production in semi-arid regions

Qianmin Jia et al.

Summary: The study found that both plastic film and straw mulching significantly reduced GHGI (by 41.3%) under two planting methods, improving maize production and soil water status. The RPS treatment improved soil environment, significantly increasing corn productivity, C breathing loss, NECB, GWP, N2O, and CH4 emissions.

Inorganic nitrogen fertilizer and high N application rate promote N2O emission and suppress CH4 uptake in a rotational vegetable system

Yaqiong Fan et al.

Summary: Research shows that in management practices, organic fertilizer and proper water irrigation can effectively reduce greenhouse gas emissions while maintaining vegetable yields. Higher nitrogen application rate with inorganic fertilizer usually leads to greater greenhouse gas emissions.

Correlations among soil biochemical parameters, crop yield, and soil respiration vary with growth stage and soil depth under fertilization

Guopeng Liang et al.

Summary: The correlations among soil biochemical parameters, crop yield, and soil respiration were found to vary with growth stage and soil depth under fertilization. Stronger positive relationships were observed at the first growth stage in both wheat and maize growing seasons. Additionally, the most significant relationship among soil chemical properties, crop yield, and soil respiration was found at different soil depths in different growing seasons.

Effects of biochar application on crop productivity, soil carbon sequestration, and global warming potential controlled by biochar C:N ratio and soil pH: A global meta-analysis

Hu Xu et al.

Summary: Biochar application has different effects on crop yield, soil organic carbon, and global warming potential when applied alone or combined with chemical fertilizers. The carbon to nitrogen ratio and soil pH are the key factors influencing the impact of biochar application on crop yield, SOC, and GWP. The study suggests that biochar properties and soil pH are crucial in determining the effectiveness of biochar application in improving crop yield, increasing SOC, and reducing GWP.

Greenhouse gas emissions and net ecosystem carbon budget from tobacco-planted soil with different organic amendments

Pengwei Yao et al.

Summary: Organic materials inputs can benefit soil carbon sequestration and crop growth, but may also increase greenhouse gas emissions. In a tobacco cultivation system, straw and biochar amendments were effective in increasing carbon sink capabilities and reducing greenhouse gas emissions, while sesame cake had a lesser impact.
