Global cancer statistics 2020: GLOBOCAN estimates of incidence and mortality worldwide for 36 cancers in 185 countries

Hyuna Sung et al.

Summary: The global cancer burden in 2020 saw an estimated 19.3 million new cancer cases and almost 10.0 million cancer deaths. Female breast cancer surpassed lung cancer as the most commonly diagnosed cancer, while lung cancer remained the leading cause of cancer death. These trends are expected to rise in 2040, with transitioning countries experiencing a larger increase compared to transitioned countries due to demographic changes and risk factors associated with globalization and a growing economy. Efforts to improve cancer prevention measures and provision of cancer care in transitioning countries will be crucial for global cancer control.

Rapid reprogramming of tumour cells into cancer stem cells on double-network hydrogels

Jun Suzuka et al.

Summary: The study reveals that a double-network hydrogel can rapidly reprogramme differentiated tumor cells into cancer stem cells by inducing phosphorylation of tyrosine kinases. After culturing human brain cancer cells on the double-network gel, they exhibited higher tumorigenicity when intracranially injected in immunodeficient mice compared to cells cultured on single-network gels.

Mechanics of 3D Cell-Hydrogel Interactions: Experiments, Models, and Mechanisms

Franck J. Vernerey et al.

Summary: Hydrogels are highly water-swollen molecular networks ideal for creating tissue mimetics. They are promising cell-delivery vehicles for tissue engineering applications and important bases for studying healthy and pathophysiological events in a controlled three-dimensional environment. The interactions between cells and hydrogels involve complex biochemical and mechanical communication mechanisms, which can be studied through an integrated experimental and computational approach.

Extracellular matrix protein-1 secretory isoform promotes ovarian cancer through increasing alternative mRNA splicing and stemness

Huijing Yin et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that the ECM1 isoform ECM1a promotes tumorigenesis and chemoresistance, while the isoform ECM1b acts as a tumor suppressor. This suggests that targeting ECM1a, integrin alpha X beta 2, hnRNPLL, and ABCG1 could be potential strategies for treating cancers associated with ECM1-activated signaling.
