Effect of salinity on the characteristics, pH-triggered demulsification and rheology of crude oil/water nanoemulsions

Sagheer A. Onaizi

Summary: This study presents the formulation of highly stable crude oil-in-water nanoemulsions with different salinity levels and investigates the impact of salt concentration on the properties of nanoemulsions. The increase in salinity resulted in higher emulsion stability and viscosity, as well as changes in droplet size and distribution. The presence of NaCl also enhanced the demulsification of stable nanoemulsions through pH alteration, with an interesting observation of changing flow behavior with shear rate and disappearance of shear-thickening behavior at a certain salt concentration.

Inter-droplet force between magnetically polarizable Pickering oil-in-water nanoemulsions stabilized with c-Al2O3 nanoparticles: Role of electrostatic and electric dipolar interactions

Manali Nandy et al.

Summary: The presence of nanoparticles at the oil-water interface affects the inter-droplet interaction forces in Pickering emulsions, with electric dipolar forces playing a significant role in addition to screened Coulombic interactions. Experimental findings show that higher salt concentrations lead to a decrease in inter-droplet spacing within linear chains, as well as the formation of an asymmetric charge cloud due to strong interfacial attachment of charged nanoparticles. Theoretical estimations of total repulsive force magnitudes incorporating electric dipolar and screened Coulombic interactions are in good agreement with experimental data, providing valuable insights into the nature of colloidal forces in charged particle stabilized nanoemulsions.

Magnetically Recyclable Graphene Oxide Demulsifier Adapting Wide pH Conditions on Detachment of Oil in the Crude Oil-in-Water Emulsion

Haiyan Xu et al.

Summary: An amphiphilic and magnetically recyclable graphene oxide demulsifier was synthesized by grafting magnetic nanoparticles and ethylenediamine onto the GO surface, exhibiting favorable demulsification performance for crude oil-in-water emulsions under various pH conditions. The MR-GO can be reused multiple times with consistent high demulsification efficiency. Through a combination of interfacial adsorption interactions, electrostatic attraction, and external mechanical forces, the demulsifier disrupts and stabilizes the emulsion interface, facilitating the rapid gathering of oil droplets to accomplish demulsification.
