Adsorptive separation of butanol, acetone and ethanol in zeolite imidazolate frameworks with desirable pore apertures

Summary: This study aims to investigate the separation of ABE by using three hydrophobic zeolite imidazolate frameworks (ZIFs) with different pore apertures. The results show that increasing the pore aperture decreases the adsorption amounts and affinity for acetone and ethanol, while increasing the adsorption of butanol with higher selectivities. ZIF-71, ZIF-11, and MAF-6 are promising adsorbents for ABE separation.

Lignocellulose biomass had the lowest production cost, followed by corn and sugarcane.

Membrane assisted processing of acetone, butanol, and ethanol (ABE) aqueous streams

Summary: The downstream processing of ABE fermentation broth poses challenges. The use of hydrophobic and hydrophilic membranes, such as PervapTM4060, PVA-based polymeric membrane, and modified silica ceramic membrane, proved effective in separating ABE components and removing water from the aqueous mixtures. The combination of membrane separation processes proposed in this study, enhanced by liquid-liquid phase separation, provides a feasible method for the recovery and dehydration of ABE aqueous mixtures.

Summary: The study focused on the effect of crosslinker KH571 on UV-crosslinking kinetics, membrane structure, and ethanol pervaporation separation performance. Replacing conventional PDMS with PDMS-PTFPMS block copolymer led to a fast membrane-forming process and excellent separation performance, with an ethanol separation factor of 11.3 and a total flux of 1149 g m(-2)h(-1) achieved.

Summary: A biosorbent derived from oat hulls was used to dehydrate butanol from water mixture, showing competitive sorption between butanol and water with higher affinity of the biosorbent to water. The dipole-dipole attraction mechanism could be key for butanol sorption by the biosorbent. The process was found to be spontaneous and exothermic based on thermodynamic parameters.

Ionic liquid-based in situ product removal design exemplified for an acetone-butanol-ethanol fermentation

Summary: Selecting an appropriate separation technique is crucial for the implementation of in situ product removal (ISPR) technology in biological processes. A three-stage systematic design method is proposed to integrate ionic liquid (IL)-based separation techniques into ISPR, showing significant improvements in productivity and energy savings compared to the base case. Results from a conventional acetone-butanol-ethanol fermentation demonstrate the effectiveness of ILs tetradecyl(trihexyl)phosphonium tetracyanoborate ([TDPh][TCB]) and tetraoctylammonium 2-methyl-1-naphthoate ([TOA] [MNaph]) as optimal solvents in the process.

Fluoroalkyl-grafted methacrylate-PDMS membranes using fluoromonomer as a diluent for enhancing biobutanol pervaporation

Summary: Alcohol-permselective membranes play an important role in bioalcohol production, but face technical barriers such as long curing time and trade-offs between performance and anti-biofouling ability. By introducing a UV-polymerizable fluoromonomer into the membrane-forming system, green and ultrafast membrane preparation is achieved. The resulting MA-PDMS-F membranes showed enhanced membrane flux and separation factor compared to MA-PDMS membranes, with outstanding anti-biofouling ability due to weak interactions with microbes in fermentation broths.

Energy-efficient butanol production by Clostridium acetobutylicum with histidine kinase knockouts to improve strain tolerance and process robustness

Summary: This study identified four orphan histidine kinases (HKs) that control sporulation and solventogenesis in Clostridium acetobutylicum. Single knockout of cac3319 halted sporulation at the initiation stage but increased butanol tolerance and production, while cac0437 knockout caused premature sporulation and inhibited the transition to solventogenesis, resulting in low butanol production.
