Using aerosols to create Nano-scaled membranes that improve gasoline particulate filter performance and the development of Wafer-based membrane coated filter analysis (WMCFA) method

Weiqi Chen et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the use of artificial aerosols to synthesize nano-scale membranes that mimic the soot cake in diesel particulate filters (DPF) for gasoline direct injection (GDI) engines. The experiments demonstrate that membranes produced with larger aggregate size particles or under lower face velocity yield better performance in terms of filtration efficiency and pressure drop.

Experimental characterization of ultrafine particle emissions from a light-duty diesel engine equipped with a standard DPF

B. Rossomando et al.

Summary: A detailed experimental characterization of the particle emissions of a EURO 5 light-duty Diesel engine equipped with a wall flow Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) showed that the DPF has a high removal efficiency for particles, especially in the range of 10-40 nm. Engine operating conditions do not have a significant impact on particle emissions, while particle emissions during the regeneration phase are strongly dependent on DPF temperature.

Synergy Between Ceria and Metals (Ag or Cu) in Catalytic Diesel Particulate Filters: Effect of the Metal Content and of the Preparation Method on the Regeneration Performance

Valeria Di Sarli et al.

Summary: This study investigated the catalytic performance of metal-promoted CeO2 washcoated silicon carbide diesel particulate filters in soot oxidation. The amount and preparation method of the metal (Ag or Cu) were found to significantly influence the catalytic activity, with Ag-promoted catalysts prepared using method B showing the highest activity. The results suggest that the method of preparation plays a crucial role in enhancing the catalytic performance of the filters.

Particle Size-Dependent Filtration Efficiency and Pressure Drop of Gasoline Particle Filters with Varying Washcoat Volumes

Xiangxiao Kong et al.

Summary: Gasoline particulate filters (GPFs) are effective in reducing particle emissions from gasoline direct injection (GDI) engines. This study examined the filtration efficiency and pressure drop of three GPFs with different in-wall washcoat volumes, finding that filtration efficiency is influenced by particle size, soot loading, and space velocity. The results indicate that coated filters have the highest filtration efficiency at high levels of soot accumulation, but also come with a higher rate of pressure drop increase compared to bare filters.

Effective density and metals content of particle emissions generated by a diesel engine operating under different marine fuels

Ali Momenimovahed et al.

Summary: A study was conducted to investigate the effect of fuel type on the effective density of particles generated by a marine diesel engine. Results showed that particles from diesel and DM-A fuels contained a high proportion of semi-volatile materials, while particles generated from IFO had significantly higher effective density values. The study also predicted metal mass concentrations with reasonable accuracy based on measured effective densities.

Washcoating of catalytic particulate filters studied by time-resolved X-ray tomography

Miroslav Blaz et al.

Summary: This paper introduces a new application of time-resolved X-ray tomography (XRT) in imaging the washcoating process in catalytic monolith filters. The study focuses on alumina washcoats with different particle size distributions deposited on a cordierite substrate. The results provide insights into the drying dynamics of the porous filter wall and the on-wall catalyst layer, with additional analysis on the impact of washcoat structure on filter pressure loss.
