Solvometallurgical Recovery of Platinum Group Metals from Spent Automotive Catalysts

Viet Tu Nguyen et al.

Summary: This paper presents a solvometallurgical approach for the sustainable recovery of platinum group metals (PGMs) from spent automotive exhaust catalysts. By investigating solvoleaching and nonaqueous solvent extraction (NASX), effective separation and purification of palladium, platinum, and rhodium were achieved. The closed-loop solvoleaching process using less-hazardous chemicals reduces environmental impacts and waste generation, while NASX with an ionic liquid offers a more sustainable alternative for PGMs separation.

Microwave chloride leaching of valuable elements from spent automotive catalysts: Understanding the role of hydrogen peroxide

Thomas Abo Atia et al.

Summary: This study investigated the microwave-assisted leaching behavior of platinum group metals (PGMs) and light rare earth elements (LREEs) from end-of-life automotive ceramic catalysts. The in situ generated headspace gas, elemental speciation, and the addition of H2O2 solution all influenced the leachability. The presence of oxidized species and other oxidizable substrates played a role in the leaching efficiency, with H2O2 addition affecting the surface passivation and overall leachability differently for different catalyst compositions.

Selective recovery of platinum by combining a novel reusable ionic liquid with electrodeposition

Muhan Chen et al.

Summary: Five new imidazolium ionic liquids were synthesized and evaluated for their efficiency in precipitating PtCl62- in HCl media. A novel mixed-ILs system showed excellent extraction efficiency for Pt(IV) from mixed metal solutions, selectively separating Pt(IV) ions from metal ions of Rh(III), Fe3+, Ni2+, Cu2+, and Zn2+. Surface characterization techniques confirmed the successful electrodeposition of metallic Pt on the cathode surfaces.

Selective recovery of palladium and rhodium by combined extraction and photocatalytic reduction

Muhan Chen et al.

Summary: In this study, four novel functionalized ionic liquids were synthesized and used for the selective extraction of Pd(II) from an HCl medium containing Pt(IV), Pd(II), and Rh(III). The optimal system of [C5mim][DDTC]/CHCl3 was selected based on theoretical analysis, resulting in Pd(II) extraction efficiencies higher than 99%. Factors affecting Pd(II) extraction were investigated and optimized, achieving separation factors greater than 104. Overall, a simple hydrometallurgical process was developed to yield nanometer-scale Pd(0) and Rh(0) with high recovery rates from simulated secondary resource leaching solutions.

Structural Effect of Sulfide-Containing Diamides on the Extraction of Palladium(II) from HCl

Hirokazu Narita et al.

Summary: The study explored the extraction properties of three sulfide-containing diamides (mptdga, mptdpa, and mpebtga) for extracting Pd(II) from HCl solution to understand the relationship between the structure and function of compounds. The results showed that all three diamides extracted Pd(II) faster than traditional sulfide extractants, with mpebtga > mptdpa > mptdga in terms of extraction efficiency. The apparent stoichiometry of the extracted complex varied between 1:1 for mpebtga and 1:2 for mptdga and mptdpa.
