New mechanistic insights into the effect of cations on membrane fouling caused by anionic polyacrylamide

Bing Zhang et al.

Summary: Understanding the effect of cations on membrane fouling is important, with higher ionic strength leading to increased membrane fouling and decreased flux recovery rate. Ca2+ was found to be more effective than Na+ in mitigating membrane fouling.

Pre-coagulation for membrane fouling mitigation in an aerobic granular sludge membrane bioreactor: A comparative study of modified microbial and organic flocculants

Bing Zhang et al.

Summary: This study compares the application of modified microbial flocculants (MMFs) with conventional organic flocculants in mitigating membrane fouling. The results show that MMF has better performance in pollutant removal and membrane fouling control. The study also reveals that cake layer formation is the main mechanism of membrane fouling and MMF can reduce the accumulation of foulants on the membrane surface. Correlation analysis indicates that total phosphorus, polysaccharide, zeta potential, and particle size have the greatest correlation with fouling resistance.

Application of UV/chlorine pretreatment for controlling ultrafiltration (UF) membrane fouling caused by different natural organic fractions

Ying Wan et al.

Summary: The study shows that UV/chlorine pretreatment can effectively mitigate membrane fouling from different NOM fractions. Increasing chlorine dose can further improve the fouling reduction. The reduction of molecular weight of organic compounds and decomposition of unsaturated organic species are the main reasons for alleviating membrane fouling.

Cationic starch: an effective flocculant for separating algal biomass from wastewater RO concentrate treated by microalgae

Arash Mohseni et al.

Summary: The study found that St-GTA as a cationic starch flocculant has higher efficiency in harvesting brown algae and saltwater nanochloropsis, which is attributed to its higher intrinsic viscosity, positive charge, and solubility. The stage of algal growth influences the harvesting efficiency, leading to differences in negative charge and functional groups on algal surfaces. The flocculation ability of St-GTA was proven by the significant changes in the surface charge of the algal flocs in the system.

Removal of polystyrene and polyethylene microplastics using PAC and FeCl3 coagulation: Performance and mechanism

Guanyu Zhou et al.

Summary: This study investigated the removal performance of PS and PE microplastics using PAC and FeCl3 coagulants. Results showed that PAC was more effective than FeCl3, especially in alkaline conditions. Adsorption and complexation were the main removal mechanisms, with the formation of new bonds enhancing the efficiency.

Pre-coagulation with cationic flocculant-composited titanium xerogel coagulant for alleviating subsequent ultrafiltration membrane fouling by algae-related pollutants

Min Xu et al.

Summary: In this study, the impact of P-T coagulant on ultrafiltration efficiency of algae-related pollutants was investigated, showing that P-T coagulation effectively alleviated membrane fouling under different pH conditions. P-T coagulant worked better in acidic environment for algae and organic matter removal, while the PDADMAC portion in P-T enhanced coagulation removal towards algae and protein constituents under neutral and alkaline conditions.

Removal of refractory organics in wastewater by coagulation/flocculation with green chlorine-free coagulants

Huihui Zhang et al.

Summary: Coagulation/flocculation with the green chlorine-free coagulant PSAF showed high removal efficiencies for organic substances in non-oily wastewater and oily wastewater, with the addition sequence of PAMALAM significantly impacting the coagulation performance. The mechanisms of charge neutralization, sweep, and adsorption/entrapment were identified during the coagulation process, with PAMALAM mainly enhancing adsorption, bridging, and sweep functions.
