Probabilistic quantitative analysis on the contents of sulfate corrosion products in concrete

Tao Li et al.

Summary: A probabilistic quantitative method is proposed to depict the random evolution process of sulfate corrosion products in concrete. The method includes stochastic kinetic equation and probability description of the CSCP, which can be used to judge the reliability of data. The model can also predict the developing trends of the CSCP and provide their probabilistic information for evaluating the effects on concrete durability.

Improving the sulfate attack resistance of concrete by using supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs): A review

Md Manjur A. Elahi et al.

Summary: In general, fly ash, slag, silica fume, and metakaolin can effectively mitigate sulfate attack, but the performance depends on replacement rate, sulfate cation exposure, and their chemical and physical properties. Performance was found to be improved with increased dosage rates for all SCMs except silica fume and Class C fly ash, and mixed for metakaolin and silica fume in magnesium sulfate at higher replacement rates.

Generation of high-fidelity random fields from micro CT images and phase field-based mesoscale fracture modelling of concrete

Yu-jie Huang et al.

Summary: The study presents a two-step modeling method to simulate the damage and fracture mechanisms of concrete using continuous random fields generated based on real microscale X-ray CT images, and validates the method through Monte Carlo simulations. The method shows promise for efficiently evaluating structural reliability by capturing mesoscale fracture processes and crack paths.

Structural performance assessment of concrete components based on fractal information of cracks

Yangzhao Liu et al.

Summary: In this paper, a rapid damage assessment method of concrete components based on the fractal characteristics of concrete cracks was proposed. By establishing databases of crack FD versus loading-ratio, linear regressions were used to predict loading ratio for damage assessment. Experimental results showed that the proposed method is reliable for identifying potential damage levels in concrete components.

Partially-exposed cast-in-situ concrete degradation induced by internal-external sulfate and magnesium multiple coupled attack

Gaowen Zhao et al.

Summary: Experimental tests were conducted to simulate the corrosion process of partially exposed concrete, showing that internal sulfate attack accelerates corrosion and causes expansion and damage. Magnesium in the environments can slow down the degradation process induced by sulfate attack.

Experimental investigations on the durability and degradation mechanism of cast-in-situ recycled aggregate concrete under chemical sulfate attack

Feng Xie et al.

Summary: The recycling and reuse of construction waste can help reduce pollution and resource waste. Cast-in-situ recycled aggregate concrete shows promising application prospects. Research results indicate that the replacement rate of recycled concrete aggregate has a significant impact on the performance and durability of CRAC, and the presence of chlorides can delay its deterioration.

Compressive strength assessment of sulfate-attacked concrete by using sulfate ions distributions

Hanbin Cheng et al.

Summary: Sulfate attack is a major cause of concrete durability deteriorations, but laboratory testing indicators cannot be directly used to predict the bearing capacity of actual concrete structures. There is a significant size effect between laboratory and engineering size concrete components. A new method based on homogenization theory is proposed to predict the deterioration level of attacked concrete structures, which may provide potential use in assessing loading capacity based on accelerated laboratory test results.

Evaluating residual compressive strength of post-fire concrete using Raman Spectroscopy

Tanya Kerr et al.

Summary: The strength of concrete depends on the specific substance CSH in the hydrated phase, and high temperatures can cause the decomposition of these substances, affecting the compressive strength of concrete. The study found that by detecting changes in Raman bands, the temperature the concrete has been exposed to can be indirectly evaluated, which is important for rapid and accurate testing of fire-damaged concrete on-site.
