Identification of Gait Unbalance and Fallers Among Subjects with Cerebellar Ataxia by a Set of Trunk Acceleration-Derived Indices of Gait

Stefano Filippo Castiglia et al.

Summary: This study aimed to assess the ability of 25 gait indices to characterize gait instability and recurrent fallers among persons with primary degenerative cerebellar ataxia (pwCA), regardless of gait speed, and investigate their correlation with clinical and kinematic variables. The study found that certain gait indices can effectively characterize gait instability and fallers among pwCA patients, and are correlated with disease severity and gait duration.

Assessing inertial measurement unit locations for freezing of gait detection and patient preference

Johanna O'Day et al.

Summary: This study assessed different sets of IMUs for freezing of gait detection and patient preference. The best technical set consisted of three IMUs, which performed well and were highly wearable. The minimal IMU set only required one ankle IMU. The correlations between the models and human raters were good to excellent. These findings have important implications for the monitoring and personalized treatment of freezing of gait.

Outcome-dependent effects of walking speed and age on quantitative and qualitative gait measures

Iris Hagoort et al.

Summary: The relationship between walking speed and quantitative and qualitative gait measures depends on the type of gait measure studied. At speeds below 1.20 m.s(-1), walking speed has a greater impact on gait measures. Decreasing walking speed results in shorter strides, longer stride times, lower stride frequency for quantitative measures, and decreases in gait symmetry, stability, and regularity for qualitative measures.

Macular microcirculation characteristics in Parkinson's disease evaluated by OCT-Angiography: a literature review

Evita Evangelia Christou et al.

Summary: The retina may serve as a predictive factor for neurodegenerative disorders, with recent use of Optical Coherence Tomography Angiography (OCT-A) in studying macular microcirculation changes in Parkinson's disease (PD). While preliminary evidence suggests OCT-A could be a useful biomarker for cerebral vasculature in PD, further research is needed to confirm its predictive value in clinical practice.
