Multi-Hazard Susceptibility Assessment Using the Analytical Hierarchy Process and Frequency Ratio Techniques in the Northwest Himalayas, Pakistan

Adnanul Rehman et al.

Summary: Globally, due to rapid urban development and exposure, natural hazards have become increasingly destructive. This research aimed to produce a compound map that visualizes the susceptibility of multi-hazards, in order to select suitable sites for sustainable future development and economic activities. The case research area of Muzaffarabad District was chosen due to the high magnitude of hydro-meteorological and geological hazards. Geospatial techniques such as Analytical Hierarchy Process and Frequency Ratio in GIS were used to calculate the weight of causative factors and their classes, revealing suitable areas for future development and high susceptibility zones. Validation techniques showed good fitness for both individual and multi-hazard maps. The proposed model provides a baseline for policy implementation to minimize risk and promote sustainable development in areas prone to frequent geo-hazards.
