Female-biased upregulation of insulin pathway activity mediates the sex difference in Drosophila body size plasticity

Jason W. Millington et al.

Summary: This study found that a protein-rich diet increases body size in female fruit flies, but not males, by enhancing the activity of the conserved insulin/insulin-like growth factor signaling pathway (IIS). The sex-biased upregulation of IIS activity in females is triggered by a diet-induced increase in stunted mRNA, revealing new sex-specific roles for certain genes. Additionally, the sex determination gene transformer promotes the diet-induced increase in stunted mRNA via the transcriptional coactivator Spargel to regulate the difference in body size plasticity between males and females.

AKH Signaling in D. melanogaster Alters Larval Development in a Nutrient-Dependent Manner That Influences Adult Metabolism

Bryon N. Hughson et al.

Summary: Metabolism, growth, and development are intricately linked in Drosophila melanogaster, where AKH signaling and cGMP-dependent protein kinase dg2 play crucial roles in mediating the effects of nutrient stress on larval development. This study reveals a novel pathway in which AKH signaling regulates larval development by modulating calcium levels in the prothoracic gland, providing insights into how metabolic signals can impact developmental trajectories into adulthood in insects.

Sex determination gene transformer regulates the male-female difference in Drosophila fat storage via the adipokinetic hormone pathway

Lianna W. Wat et al.

Summary: Sex differences in whole-body fat storage exist in many species, with females storing more fat than males in fruit flies. The sex determination gene transformer (tra) plays a key role in regulating this difference, with its function in neurons, specifically Akh-producing cells (APCs), influencing fat storage in a sex-specific manner. This study identifies the Akh pathway as a mechanism underlying the male-female difference in whole-body triglyceride levels and provides insight into conserved mechanisms of sexual dimorphism in fat storage.

Sex-specific plasticity and the nutritional geometry of insulin-signaling gene expression in Drosophila melanogaster

Jeanne M. C. McDonald et al.

Summary: The study found that females and males exhibit sex-specific transcriptional responses to changes in protein and carbohydrate in the diet, but there is not a simple model to explain body size response to nutrition.

The growth factor BMP11 is required for the development and evolution of a male exaggerated weapon and its associated fighting behavior in a water strider

William Toubiana et al.

Summary: Exaggerated sexually selected traits carried by males exhibit hyperallometric growth regulated by genes such as BMP11 and Ubx. Genetic correlations were found between male body size, weapon size, and fighting behavior in Microvelia longipes. Pleiotropy may play a role in the evolution of allometric slope.

Why do males emerge before females? Sexual size dimorphism drives sexual bimaturism in insects

Tiit Teder et al.

Summary: In insects, the prevailing form of sexual bimaturism is protandry, with males typically emerging as adults before females, but protogyny also exists in about 36% of studied species. The evolutionary basis of sexual bimaturism in insects is more likely explained by indirect selection, with the direction and degree of bimaturism positively associated with sexual size dimorphism across species.
