Micromechanics of machining and wear in hard and brittle materials

Brian R. Lawn et al.

Summary: Hard and brittle solids with covalent/ionic bonding are widely used in modern manufacturing technologies, and optimizing shaping processes can reduce manufacturing time and cost while extending component longevity. However, the same processes can also contribute to wear and fatigue degradation in service. Education development of advanced finishing protocols for this class of solids requires a comprehensive understanding of damage mechanisms at small-scale contacts from a materials perspective. The role of microstructure in material removal modes is highlighted, and pathways to future research—experimental, analytical, and computational—are indicated.

Microstructure and mechanical behaviour of transient liquid phase spark plasma sintered B4C-SiC-TiB2 composites from a B4C-TiSi2 system

Yang Wang et al.

Summary: Fully-dense B4C-SiC-TiB2 composites with high strength and toughness were successfully prepared through in-situ reactive spark plasma sintering using B4C and TiSi2 as raw materials. TiSi2 was confirmed as a reactive sintering additive that promoted densification, while SiC-TiB2 agglomerates played a critical role in improving toughness in the composite material.

Effect of 1-D and 2-D carbon-based nano-reinforcements on the dry sliding-wear behaviour of 3Y-TZP ceramics

Fernando Rodriguez-Rojas et al.

Summary: The study found that the dimensionality of carbon-based nano-reinforcements and testing conditions have a significant impact on the microstructural design of ceramic composites for tribological applications. Specifically, 3Y-TZP/rGO exhibited superior wear resistance compared to other materials, and wear resistance was found to be correlated with the formation of self-lubricating tribofilms rather than hardness or toughness.

Transient liquid-phase assisted spark-plasma sintering and dry sliding wear of B4C ceramics fabricated from B4C nanopowders

Cristina Ojalvo et al.

Summary: An ultrafine-grained B4C composite with superior wear resistance was developed through fabrication, microstructural characterization, and mechanical and tribological testing. The study optimized the preparation process, identified the optimal sintering parameters, investigated the wear behavior, and compared it with a reference fine-grained B4C composite, demonstrating the potential for fabricating B4C tribocomponents with greater superior wear resistance.

Aqueous tape casting of super-hard B4C laminates with rGO-enriched reinforcing interlayers

Cristina Ojalvo et al.

Summary: Superhard B4C parts with microarchitectures composed of ceramic layers and evenly-spaced rGO-enriched reinforcing interlayers were successfully fabricated for the first time in this study. The multilayered laminates produced through aqueous colloidal processing and coating techniques demonstrated excellent hardness and crack propagation resistance.
