Nanocomposite NiTi shape memory alloy with high strength and fatigue resistance

Peng Hua et al.

Summary: This study improved the fatigue resistance of NiTi shape memory alloys by utilizing a hybrid heterogenous nanostructure, producing a superelastic nanocomposite with high recoverable strain and yield strength. The synergy of nanosized amorphous and crystalline phases at the nanoscale was found to enhance properties, making it an effective method to improve fatigue resistance and strength of the alloys.

Improved elastocaloric cooling performance in gradient-structured NiTi alloy processed by localized laser surface annealing

Junyu Chen et al.

Summary: A low-hysteresis NiTi refrigerant with gradient structures was fabricated for elastocaloric cooling by localized laser surface annealing, showing more than 83% improvement in COPmat and extending the lower limit of operational temperature. The GS NiTi exhibits large specific cooling capacity, narrow stress hysteresis, and robust mechanical properties, indicating great potential in solid-state cooling applications.

Reducing functional fatigue, transition stress and hysteresis of NiTi micropillars by one-step overstressed plastic deformation

Kangjie Chu et al.

Summary: The study investigates the impact of one-step overstressed compressive plastic deformation on the functional fatigue and cooling performance of polycrystalline NiTi. The results show that this method can effectively reduce functional fatigue and enhance cooling performance by adjusting microstructure and residual stress in the material.

Bulk NiTiCuCo shape memory alloys with ultra-high thermal and superelastic cyclic stability

Aslan Ahadi et al.

Summary: In this study, an unprecedented thermal stability is reported in bulk coarse-grained Ti54Ni3.7Cu123Co2 after aging at 600 degrees C for 1 h. A thermomechanical processing route is proposed to achieve a uniform nanocrystalline microstructure with embedded Ti2Cu precipitates, leading to improved superelastic cyclic stability.

Elastocaloric cooling of shape memory alloys: A review

Junyu Chen et al.

Summary: Elastocaloric cooling technology utilizes the caloric effect of materials to achieve refrigeration, with advantages such as eco-friendliness, high efficiency, and energy saving. It is a promising candidate to replace traditional cooling technologies due to its balance of cost, efficiency, and feasibility. Future research directions include the development of high-performance materials and further improvements on elastocaloric cooling prototypes.
