Optical spectroscopy and modeling of uranium gas-phase oxidation: Progress and perspectives

Elizabeth J. Kautz et al.

Summary: Studies on U gas-phase oxidation through plasma- and thermo-chemistry are crucial for various fields, using optical spectroscopy tools and computational modeling. The evolution from U atoms to U oxide molecules to nanoparticles and agglomerates is discussed in the context of optical spectroscopic studies.

Evaluating the microstructure and origin of nonmetallic inclusions in as-cast U-10Mo fuel

Elizabeth J. Kautz et al.

Summary: Nonmetallic inclusions in U-10Mo castings were characterized, revealing that the inclusions formed during the downblending of highly enriched U metal with depleted U. The inclusions were found to have varying morphologies and compositions, mainly consisting of uranium carbides or oxides enriched to around 20 at. % U-235.

A review of the mechanisms, reaction products and parameters affecting uranium corrosion in water

A. Banos et al.

Summary: This review examines the mechanisms of uranium corrosion in water over the past 65 years, focusing on the processes and parameters affecting the reaction between uranium and water. The study evaluates the electrochemistry results of uranium corrosion tests and the physical and chemical characteristics of the resulting solid reaction products.

Parabolic oxidation kinetics of a plutonium alloy at room temperature

Scott B. Donald et al.

Summary: Auger electron spectroscopy (AES) was used to characterize the oxide scale on a Ga-plutonium metal alloy, revealing its thickness and chemistry. The parabolic kinetics of the Pu-Ga alloy were determined as a function of relative humidity and oxygen partial pressure, showing that the reaction rate was independent of oxygen pressure and had a power-law relationship with humidity.

Microstructural Changes and Chemical Analysis of Fission Products in Irradiated Uranium-7 wt.% Molybdenum Metallic Fuel Using Atom Probe Tomography

Mukesh Bachhav et al.

Summary: Understanding the microstructural and phase changes in metallic fuel during irradiation is crucial for nuclear fuel research and development. Atom probe tomography was used to analyze as-fabricated and irradiated low-enriched U-Mo fuel, revealing different phases and structures under various burnup conditions. Irradiated fuel samples showed the formation of fission gas bubbles enriched with solid fission products, with no evidence of remnant phases in the irradiated U-7 wt.% Mo samples.

Correlating nanoscale secondary ion mass spectrometry and atom probe tomography analysis of uranium enrichment in metallic nuclear fuel

Elizabeth Kautz et al.

Summary: The accurate measurement of U-235 enrichment in metallic nuclear fuels is crucial for understanding material performance and the origins of secondary phases. In this study, NanoSIMS and APT were used to analyze U-235 enrichment in low enriched uranium alloyed with 10 wt% Mo, and both methods provided consistent results with no statistically significant difference between nominal and measured enrichments. This suggests that both NanoSIMS and APT are reliable techniques for measuring U-235 enrichment in metallic nuclear fuels.

Spectral dynamics and gas-phase oxidation of laser-produced plutonium plasmas

S. S. Harilal et al.

Summary: Results and analysis from laser ablation experiments were used to study high-temperature plutonium (Pu) spectroscopy and gas-phase oxidation. Time-resolved emission spectra were compared to a Pu I spectral model to infer plasma temperature. At later times in the plasma evolution, lower temperatures and resonant emission bands indicative of molecular species, possibly plutonium oxides (PuxOy), were observed.
