Root endophytic fungus Piriformospora indica and zinc attenuate cold stress in grapevine by influencing leaf phytochemicals and minerals content

Rouhollah Karimi et al.

Summary: Inoculation with Piriformospora indica (Pi) and application of zinc (Zn) in soil showed positive effects in mitigating cold stress in grapevine plants, resulting in increased stability of photosynthetic pigments, antioxidant enzyme activity, and regulation of plant growth hormones. It allows chilled vines to absorb higher nutrients during normal temperatures, enabling them to attenuate cold stress through increase in osmoregulants, antioxidant enzymes activity, and plant growth regulators.

Overexpression of an ABA-inducible homeodomain-leucine zipper I gene MsHB7 confers salt stress sensitivity to alfalfa

Xiao Li et al.

Summary: This study revealed that an HD-Zip I transcription factor (MsHB7) in alfalfa plays a crucial negative regulatory role in response to salt stress. MsHB7 enhances the salt sensitivity in alfalfa by suppressing the expressions of ABA-responsive and antioxidant enzyme coding genes. These findings contribute to a better understanding of the gene regulation mechanism in alfalfa and provide important strategies for breeding salt-tolerant varieties.

Apple receptor-like kinase FERONIA regulates salt tolerance and ABA sensitivity in Malus domestica

Yin-Huan Xie et al.

Summary: This study identified an apple homolog of Arabidopsis FER, named MdFER, and investigated its functions in salt tolerance and ABA sensitivity. MdFER was found to be widely expressed in different apple tissues, with the highest expression in roots. Overexpression of MdFER in apple callus improved resistance to salt stress and reduced ABA sensitivity, while suppressing MdFER expression showed contrary effects. Additionally, ectopic expression of MdFER in Arabidopsis increased salt tolerance and reduced sensitivity to ABA.

Effects of soil drought and vapour pressure deficit (VPD) on water use efficiency of tomato plants with contrasting endogenous ABA levels

Jie Liu et al.

Summary: This study found that lower VPD significantly improved plant water status and water use efficiency, while drought conditions led to a decrease in plant water status and stomatal conductance. The wild type plants showed superior water use efficiency under lower VPD environment. The interaction between soil drought and VPD on water use efficiency was not significant.
