Relationships of total phosphorus and chlorophyll in lakes worldwide

Roberto Quinlan et al.

Summary: The study found a sigmoidal relationship between total phosphorus and chlorophyll a in lakes, explaining 44% of the variation. Physical characteristics of lakes such as mean depth, Secchi depth, and elevation played a role in mediating the TP-Chla relationship. Nonlinear segments of this relationship were more prominent in lakes located in very cold or hot climates.

Estimating river nutrient concentrations consistent with good ecological condition: More stringent nutrient thresholds needed

Sandra Poikane et al.

Summary: The study finds significant variation in the methods used by European countries to set river nutrient thresholds, with some countries relying on expert judgement or statistical distribution, while others prefer statistical relationships based on biological variables. For the first time, an ecology-based approach is used to derive nutrient thresholds for various river types in Central Europe. The results demonstrate that adopting ecology-based nutrient targets could improve sustainable river management where nutrients are the main pressure preventing the achievement of good ecological status.

Setting the Phosphorus Boundaries for Greek Natural Shallow and Deep Lakes for Water Framework Directive Compliance

Ifigenia Kagalou et al.

Summary: This study discusses the impact of nutrient enrichment on eutrophication and lake degradation, emphasizing the necessity of establishing boundaries to support good ecological status. Greece has experienced delays in complying with European legislation goals, and various statistical approaches have been used to determine appropriate nutrient thresholds.

Omnivorous Carp (Carassius gibelio) Increase Eutrophication in Part by Preventing Development of Large-Bodied Zooplankton and Submerged Macrophytes

Vladimir Razlutskij et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates that omnivorous fish have a significant impact on aquatic ecosystems, increasing the biomass of planktonic algae leading to reduced light intensity in water, while inhibiting the growth of benthic algae and submerged macrophytes. However, these fish did not increase nitrogen concentrations and even decreased total phosphorus levels, possibly due to nutrient storage within the fish.
