Evaluating Drought Impact on Postfire Recovery of Chaparral Across Southern California

Emanuel A. Storey et al.

Summary: This study found that drought has a significant impact on the recovery of chaparral shrubs in southern California, especially in drought-sensitive areas. The severity of drought in the wet season was the strongest predictor of shrub recovery. Recovery differences were more closely related to drought severity among twice-burned sites compared to fire-return intervals.

Structural diversity and development in active fire regime mixed-conifer forests

Julia K. Berkey et al.

Summary: The suppression of fires in U.S. forests for nearly a century has hindered researchers' ability to study forest structural development in mixed-conifer ecosystems. By studying the impact of fire history and biophysical variables, researchers found that time since fire, frequency of fires, and biophysical factors play important roles in shaping forest structure and diversity in active fire regimes.

Global patterns and climatic controls of forest structural complexity

Martin Ehbrecht et al.

Summary: This study utilizes a stand structural complexity index based on terrestrial laser scanning to quantify the structural complexity of boreal, temperate, subtropical and tropical primary forests. The global variation of forest structural complexity is mainly explained by annual precipitation and precipitation seasonality. The research reveals distinct latitudinal patterns of forest structure, with hotspots of high structural complexity coinciding with hotspots of plant diversity.

Limits to post-fire vegetation recovery under climate change

Rachael H. Nolan et al.

Summary: Research suggests that while many plant communities may remain resilient to shifting fire regimes in the short-term, long-term changes in vegetation structure, demography, and species composition are likely, which will have a range of subsequent effects on ecosystem function.

Climate Variability May Delay Post-Fire Recovery of Boreal Forest in Southern Siberia, Russia

Qiaoqi Sun et al.

Summary: Anthropogenic climate change increases the frequency and severity of wildfires in the boreal region, affecting post-fire vegetation responses. Young forests show higher climate sensitivity compared to mature forests, highlighting the importance of studying post-fire recovery in changing climate conditions.
