Field study of microbial community structure and dechlorination activity in a multi-solvents co-contaminated site undergoing natural attenuation

Xiaodong Zhang et al.

Summary: This study found that BTEX can stimulate dechlorination at sites contaminated with BTEX and CAHs, and higher temperatures in deeper groundwater are a key factor in promoting the abundance of dechlorinators. The research also showed cooperative interactions among functional microfloras that promote dechlorination.

Do microplastic biofilms promote the evolution and co-selection of antibiotic and metal resistance genes and their associations with bacterial communities under antibiotic and metal pressures?

Xiaowei Liu et al.

Summary: Microplastic biofilms in aquatic environments have become hotspots for antibiotic resistance genes, influenced by exogenous pressures. The dynamic evolution of ARGs, intI1, MRGs, and bacterial communities in MP and NS biofilms are significantly impacted by individual and combined pressures, resulting in noticeable differences between the two substrates.

Metagenomic analysis revealed the sulfur- and iron- oxidation capabilities of heterotrophic denitrifying sludge

Kailong Huang et al.

Summary: Heterotrophic denitrifying sludge harbors diverse mixotrophic denitrifying bacterial species with sulfur- and iron-oxidizing abilities, indicating potential for autotrophic denitrification. The study suggests that organic carbon and inorganic electron donors can be jointly used in engineering practices to balance the cost and efficiency of denitrification processes.

Bioremediation of petroleum-contaminated soil by semi-aerobic aged refuse bio fi lter: Optimization and mechanism

Weiming Chen et al.

Summary: The study applied a semi-aerobic aged refuse biofilter (SAARB) to decontaminate and remediate petroleum-contaminated soil (PCS). The effects of petroleum content, surfactant content, and water content on oil removal efficiency were studied, and optimal operation conditions were determined. Results showed that the presence of surfactant reduced TPH removal efficiency. The study also observed significant changes in microbial community structure after 3 months of remediation.

Microbial responses underlying the denitrification kinetic shifting exposed to ng/L- and μg/L-level lomefloxacin in groundwater

Hua Zou et al.

Summary: The study found that the common groundwater contaminant Lomefloxacin (LOM) inhibits denitrification and affects microbial kinetic characteristics, especially at low concentrations. Enzyme activities were immediately inhibited, while microbial community and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) exhibited delayed responses. The study also identified LOM’s co-selection effects and potential antibiotic resistant bacteria.
