Decreasing control of precipitation on grassland spring phenology in temperate China

Yongshuo H. Fu et al.

Summary: In temperate semi-dry grasslands in China, the start of spring phenology did not change significantly from 1982 to 2015, but there was a notable increase in interannual variability. Interestingly, the primary factor regulating spring phenology shifted from precipitation to temperature during this time period.

Evaluation of ERA5 precipitation over the eastern periphery of the Tibetan plateau from the perspective of regional rainfall events

Xuelin Hu et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the performance of ERA5 reanalysis data in revealing regional rainfall events in the eastern periphery of the Tibetan Plateau and found that it captured general spatiotemporal features accurately but with noticeable biases. ERA5 precipitation generally showed higher rainfall frequency and weaker intensity, starting earlier and ending later compared to gauge data. The spatial distribution of precipitation intensity in ERA5 was weaker and more uniform, with larger spatial ranges than gauge records, indicating problems in the current model system.

Climate Dynamics of the Spatiotemporal Changes of Vegetation NDVI in Northern China from 1982 to 2015

Rui Sun et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the climate dynamics of vegetation NDVI in northern China from 1982 to 2015, showing a significant increase in growth season NDVI on a regional scale. The climate drivers of vegetation growth switched from solar radiation, temperature, and precipitation to primarily precipitation and temperature. These results provide important insights for vegetation protection and restoration in the context of global climate change.

Spatiotemporal characteristics of agricultural droughts based on soil moisture data in Inner Mongolia from 1981 to 2019

Shuohao Cai et al.

Summary: A drought index based on soil moisture was proposed to effectively monitor agricultural drought, revealing the nonstationary frequency of drought events and significant spatial heterogeneity. Severe drought events, particularly in the last two decades, have become more frequent, with the period from 2000 to 2010 seeing an increase in drought occurrences, providing insights for future drought trends in Inner Mongolia.

Monitoring spring phenology of individual tree crowns using drone-acquired NDVI data

Dominic Fawcett et al.

Summary: Quantifying the timing of vegetation phenology is crucial for monitoring and modeling ecosystem responses to environmental change. Data acquired from multi-spectral sensors on drone platforms provide efficient opportunities for monitoring phenology from individual plants to small ecosystem scales, aiding in understanding intra- and inter-species differences in strategy.

Diurnal cycle of summer precipitation over the North China Plain and associated land-atmosphere interactions: Evaluation of ERA5 and MERRA-2

Yuanyuan Song et al.

Summary: This study evaluates the ability of ERA5 and MERRA-2 reanalyses to depict the diurnal cycle of summer precipitation over the North China Plain using satellite-based precipitation data from CMORPH and TRMM 3B42. Both ERA5 and MERRA-2 can reproduce the observed night to early morning precipitation peak, but only ERA5 shows the observed afternoon precipitation peak. The land surface is more strongly coupled with the atmosphere in MERRA-2, leading to different atmospheric conditions for precipitation compared to ERA5.
