Urea-enhanced phytoremediation of cadmium with willow in pyrene and cadmium contaminated soil

Yepu Li et al.

Summary: The study found that urea application enhanced the phytoremediation of Cd and PYR contaminated soil by willow, particularly by increasing soil Cd accumulation and plant biomass. While urea decreased the accumulation of PYR in willow, it did not significantly affect the removal rate of PYR in soil.

Roles of biochar-derived dissolved organic matter in soil amendment and environmental remediation: A critical review

Yuqing Sun et al.

Summary: Biochar is a promising carbonaceous material with abundant functional groups and mesoporous structure, showing potential in improving soil fertility, retaining nutrients, enhancing microbial activity, and immobilizing contaminants. The dissolved organic matter (DOM) from biochar plays a key role in soil matrix, microbial community, and fate of contaminants, with both positive and negative effects that are influenced by various factors such as the nature of biochar-derived DOM and environmental conditions. Understanding the long-term stability and interactions of biochar-derived DOM is critical for minimizing the ecological and environmental risks of biochar application.

Performance of biochar-supported nanoscale zero-valent iron for cadmium and arsenic co-contaminated soil remediation: Insights on availability, bioaccumulation and health risk

Dong Yang et al.

Summary: This study developed a biochar-supported nanoscale zero-valent iron (nZVI-BC) for the simultaneous stabilization of cadmium (Cd) and arsenic (As) in co-contaminated soil, showing a significant decrease in the availability of Cd and As in soil and their bioaccumulation in vegetables. The application of nZVI-BC effectively decreased the cancer risks related to vegetable consumption by inhibiting the bioaccumulation of Cd and As in vegetables, highlighting its potential as a promising remediation amendment for co-contaminated farmland soil.

Typical sources of Cd to paddy fields in different contaminated areas and their impacts on Cd accumulation in topsoil and rice in Changzhutan, China

Fan Wang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the sources of Cd and their effects on Cd accumulation in soil and rice on urban farmland in China. The results showed that atmospheric deposition was a major source of Cd, leading to higher accumulation of Cd in soil and rice, and the use of manure fertilizer also contributed to Cd accumulation in soil. Additionally, acid-extractable Cd accounted for a significant proportion of total Cd in atmospherically deposited particles, resulting in high bioavailability and accumulation of Cd in the study area.

Summary: This study elucidated the adverse effects of cadmium stress on the growth and photosynthetic function of rice, as well as the relationship between cadmium uptake and iron transporters. Additionally, key cis-acting elements and functional partners of cadmium uptake genes were revealed, providing important clues for regulating cadmium uptake through breeding or silencing these transporters.

Fe(III) reduction due to low pe plus pH contributes to reducing Cd transfer within a soil-rice system

Shanshan Li et al.

Summary: The study found that low soil pe+pH levels can increase the relative abundance of Fe-reducing bacteria, which in turn promote the reduction of Fe(III) and increase Fe2+ content in flooded soils, leading to decreased Cd uptake by rice. Flooding treatment can reduce the CaCl2-extractable Cd content in soil and decrease Cd uptake by rice during tillering and booting stages, which are critical for Cd transport in the soil-rice system.
