Metal solubility in the rhizosphere of a co-cropping system. The role of total carbon exudation, soluble proteins and plant interaction

Carolina Vergara Cid et al.

Summary: The study found that in Pb contaminated soils, there was higher total C exudation in co-cropping systems, leading to increased Pb uptake in both species. Exudates from Tagetes minuta were more efficient in solubilizing Pb, while exudates under co-cropping conditions favored metal solubilization and Pb accumulation.

Urea-enhanced phytoremediation of cadmium with willow in pyrene and cadmium contaminated soil

Yepu Li et al.

Summary: The study found that urea application enhanced the phytoremediation of Cd and PYR contaminated soil by willow, particularly by increasing soil Cd accumulation and plant biomass. While urea decreased the accumulation of PYR in willow, it did not significantly affect the removal rate of PYR in soil.

Conversion of heavy metal-containing biowaste from phytoremediation site to value-added solid fuel through hydrothermal carbonization

Jongkeun Lee et al.

Summary: In this study, hydrothermal carbonization was used to reduce heavy metal concentrations in sunflower residues and improve the energy-related properties of the produced hydrochar. Optimal HTC temperatures for energy retention efficiency were found to be between 200 and 220 degrees Celsius. Hydrochar, with low nitrogen and ash content, can be considered a clean energy source for sustainable disposal and utilization of contaminant-containing biowastes.

Cerium uptake, translocation and toxicity in the salt marsh halophyte Halimione portulacoides (L.), Aellen

Pedro Brito et al.

Summary: The study demonstrated that Halimione portulacoides actively responded to higher concentrations of Ce, with the shoots showing decreased antioxidant enzyme activity at 1200 μg/L. High Ce concentrations led to a loss of turgor pressure and oxidative stress in the shoots, posing a threat to the sustainability of halophytes and estuarine marshes.

Physiological mechanisms of the tolerance response to manganese stress exhibited by Pinus massoniana, a candidate plant for the phytoremediation of Mn-contaminated soil

Yunxing Bai et al.

Summary: Masson pine, as a manganese-tolerant plant, can withstand manganese stress by increasing its antioxidant enzyme activity and non-enzyme metabolite content. Additionally, Masson pine can maintain photosynthesis by adjusting gas exchange parameters, photosynthetic pigment content, and chlorophyll fluorescence, which is another important mechanism for coping with high manganese concentrations in the environment.

Calcicole-calcifuge plant strategies limit restoration potential in a regional semi-arid flora

Adam T. Cross et al.

Summary: The study found that the topographic and edaphic complexity of BIF landforms in geologically ancient regions facilitated species accumulation, serving as museums of regional floristic biodiversity. These landforms exclude species that cannot establish or are inferior competitors in heavily weathered, acidic, skeletal, and nutrient-impoverished soils.

Summary: Studies have shown that the diversity and metabolite production of fungal communities in the rhizosphere of pseudometallophyte Phragmites australis exhibit spatially defined characteristics under acid mine drainage conditions, influenced by pH, heavy metals, and stress-related metabolites.
