Flue gas-to-ash desulfurization of combustion of textile dyeing sludge: Its dependency on temperature, lignocellulosic residue, and CaO

Jianli Huang et al.

Summary: In the combustion of textile dyeing sludge, controlling sulfur (S) species through flue gas-to-ash processes is crucial for achieving circular economies. The experimental study found that temperature and blend ratios play significant roles in transforming S in TDS, with the addition of spent mushroom substrate (SMS) and calcium oxide (CaO) enhancing desulfurization efficiency. The results suggest that a combination of SMS and CaO can improve the retention of S and enhance the decomposition of calcium sulfate (CaSO4).

A data-based hybrid model for complex fuel chemistry acceleration at high temperatures

Sultan Alqahtani et al.

Summary: A data-based hybrid chemistry approach was developed to accelerate chemistry integration for complex fuels, which tracks the evolution of chemistry through representative species for the pyrolysis and couples their reactions with simpler foundational chemistry. The selection of representative species is implemented using principal component analysis (PCA), with their chemistry described using an artificial neural network (ANN) model for reaction rates followed by a foundational chemistry model. The hybrid scheme results in computational savings, with accuracy and cost savings dependent on the number of selected species and size of used foundational chemistry, showing better performance with a more detailed foundational chemistry model.

Summary: Co-pyrolysis enhances the pyrolytic performance of textile dyeing sludge and cattle manure, increasing volatile emissions and potentially enriching aromatic components. By lowering the operational temperature to 450 degrees Celsius, the relative content of aromatic components can be enhanced. A novel interaction mechanism in lignin pyrolysis: Phenolics-assisted hydrogen transfer for the decomposition of the β-O-4 linkage

Qiang Lu et al.

Summary: Research has identified that the phenolics-assisted hydrogen transfer (phenolics-AHT) mechanism plays a crucial role in the pyrolysis of lignin, promoting the cleavage of the beta-O-4 linkage by reducing the energy barrier through hydrogen transfer processes of phenolic products. Phenolics-AHT can also facilitate other concerted reactions of lignin, suggesting a significant impact on the overall pyrolysis process.

Two-step thermodegradation kinetics of cellulose, hemicelluloses, and lignin under isothermal torrefaction analyzed by particle swarm optimization

Wei-Hsin Chen et al.

Summary: Recognition of isothermal thermodegradation of cellulose, hemicelluloses, and lignin is crucial for upgrading lignocellulosic biomass and producing biochar through torrefaction. The study employs a two-step model with PSO algorithm to predict the kinetics of torrefaction at different temperatures. Results show that cellulose exhibits the highest weight loss and volatile product generation, while hemicelluloses have severe weight loss at 250 degrees C, and lignin demonstrates higher thermal resistance to torrefaction. FTIR spectra indicate that CO and CO2 are the dominant gases in the torrefaction process.
