Changes and distributions of antibiotic resistance genes in liquid and solid fractions in mesophilic and thermophilic anaerobic digestion of dairy manure

Qiuping Zhang et al.

Summary: The study explored changes and distributions of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in the liquid and solid fractions during anaerobic digestion of dairy manure. It found that ARGs were enriched in the solid fraction after digestion, with high total solids promoting their enrichment. Increased abundances of certain bacterial genera were responsible for the enrichment of most ARGs in the solid fraction.

Mesophilic and thermophilic anaerobic digestion of swine manure with sulfamethoxazole and norfloxacin: Dynamics of microbial communities and evolution of resistance genes

Qinxue Wen et al.

Summary: The study found that sulfamethoxazole had a significant impact on the microbial community and resistance genes, while norfloxacin had little influence. Thermophilic anaerobic digestion showed higher methane production potential and greater reduction in resistance gene abundance.

Tetracycline, sulfadimethoxine, and antibiotic resistance gene dynamics during anaerobic digestion of dairy manure

Jenna Schueler et al.

Summary: The study demonstrated that anaerobic digestion can effectively remove SDM when added at concentrations observed in on-farm manure, without compromising energy production. The reductions in TC and SDM concentrations did not consistently correlate with decreases in specific gene copies, and high concentrations of antibiotics could affect methane production.

Distribution patterns of antibiotic resistance genes and their bacterial hosts in pig farm wastewater treatment systems and soil fertilized with pig manure

Rong-Min Zhang et al.

Summary: The discharge of antibiotic resistance genes (ARG) into the environment via pig manure has been studied through metagenomic analysis in three large pig farms. The distribution and shifts of ARGs and their bacterial hosts show distinct patterns along different stages of wastewater treatment. Proteobacteria, Firmicutes, Actinobacteria and Bacteroidetes are identified as primary carriers of ARGs, with specific bacterial families contributing to different types of ARGs in feces, wastewater, and soil. High levels of heterogeneity are found for both ARGs and ARG-hosts in the wastewater treatment system and in agricultural soils for these pig farms.

Additive quality influences the reservoir of antibiotic resistance genes during chicken manure composting

Xiuwen Qiu et al.

Summary: The study found that higher quality treatments with lower C/N ratio and lignin effectively reduced the relative abundance of antibiotic resistance genes, some pathogens, and thermotolerant degrading-related bacteria in livestock manure compost. It was verified that the physiochemical properties of composting were the dominant contributor to these variations.
