Mapping farmers' vulnerability to climate change and its induced hazards: evidence from the rice-growing zones of Punjab, Pakistan

Nasir Abbas Khan et al.

Summary: In developing countries like Pakistan, agriculture is crucial for the majority of rural populations, but climate change poses significant challenges to crop yield, particularly for rice farmers. Vulnerability assessments show that farmers in Punjab province are highly susceptible to climatic uncertainties, with those in low-yielding regions facing higher vulnerability levels. This highlights the need for region-specific adaptation strategies to reduce production losses and enhance climate resilience in the agriculture sector.

Intra-annual dendrogeomorphic dating and climate linkages of flood events in headwaters of central Europe

Radek Tichavsky et al.

Summary: This study conducted intra-annual dating of past floods in twelve headwaters of eastern Czechia and identified 22-31 flood event years in each region over the last 70 years, with the most frequent floods occurring from May to July. The research showed a weak correlation between monthly precipitation and indices of Scandinavian climate oscillation during summer months, indicating the influence of a blocking anticyclone over Scandinavia on air propagation to central Europe.

Improving Wheat Yield Prediction Using Secondary Traits and High-Density Phenotyping Under Heat-Stressed Environments

Mohammad Mokhlesur Rahman et al.

Summary: This study utilized high-density proximal sensing measurements to monitor wheat growth and predict grain yield in breeding trials, finding that multivariate models outperformed univariate models in predicting yield. By incorporating all secondary traits into the models, high prediction accuracies were achieved across five growing seasons.

Determinants of farmers' adaptation decisions under changing climate: the case of Fars province in Iran

Samane Ghazali et al.

Summary: Climate change poses a significant challenge for the agricultural sector, with psychological factors and socio-environmental background playing a role in farmers' adaptation process. By extending protection motivation theory, this study explored the cognitive factors influencing farmers' views and decisions on climate change adaptation. Findings indicate that risk evaluation, adaptation evaluation, maladaptation, and adaptation incentives are key factors affecting farmers' adaptation decisions. The study suggests that social discourse should focus on confirming the truth and timeliness of information individuals receive to promote adaptation. Further research is needed to explore how socio-environmental components can impact risk evaluation and adaptation evaluation in different cultures and geographical areas.

The direct and indirect effects of extreme climate events on insects

Alessandro Filazzola et al.

Summary: The review article provides a synthesis of the impact of extreme climate events on insect biodiversity, emphasizing the need for further research on the effects of extreme events on non-trophic interactions, population dynamics, and community functional traits. It highlights the importance of understanding the sensitivity and resilience of individuals, populations, and communities to climate extremes in order to mitigate the loss of insect biodiversity and ecosystem services.
