Variability of diatom community composition and structure in mountain streams

Lorena Gonzalez-Paz et al.

Summary: In the rivers of the Picos de Europa mountain range, the composition of diatom assemblages did not show significant changes over the past two decades, with decreases in water chemistry indicators. While diversity and evenness decreased over time, the overall ecological status in these minimally disturbed streams remained high, indicating the persistence of biodiversity.

Establishing ecologically-relevant nutrient thresholds: A tool-kit with guidance on its use

Martyn G. Kelly et al.

Summary: This paper introduces a toolkit of statistical approaches for setting realistic thresholds based on the relationship between nutrients and biota, with recommendations on which method to use depending on the strength of the relationship and the presence of other stressors. Emphasis is placed on the importance of understanding ecological processes, selecting and applying methods correctly, and considering local regulatory and decision-making systems.

Estimating river nutrient concentrations consistent with good ecological condition: More stringent nutrient thresholds needed

Sandra Poikane et al.

Summary: The study finds significant variation in the methods used by European countries to set river nutrient thresholds, with some countries relying on expert judgement or statistical distribution, while others prefer statistical relationships based on biological variables. For the first time, an ecology-based approach is used to derive nutrient thresholds for various river types in Central Europe. The results demonstrate that adopting ecology-based nutrient targets could improve sustainable river management where nutrients are the main pressure preventing the achievement of good ecological status.

How diatom-, invertebrate- and fish-based diagnostic tools can support the ecological assessment of rivers in a multi-pressure context: Temporal trends over the past two decades in France

Benjamin Alric et al.

Summary: The study explores how outputs of diagnostic tools based on benthic diatoms, macroinvertebrates, and fishes can be combined to disentangle the effects of multiple pressures over two decades and provide policy-relevant information for stream managers and decision makers. While there has been a modest improvement in water quality at a national scale over the study period, trends can vary significantly according to hydroecoregion and pressure category.
