Mapping the forest disturbance regimes of Europe

Cornelius Senf et al.

Summary: Changes in forest disturbance can have significant impacts on forests, with this study finding that 17% of Europe's forest area was affected by approximately 36 million disturbances between 1986 and 2016. The majority of disturbances were stand-replacing, and while disturbance size trends varied, disturbance frequency consistently increased while disturbance severity decreased over time. The study provides valuable spatial information for understanding the ongoing changes in Europe's forests.

Drivers of forest aboveground biomass and its increments in the Tatra Mountains after 15 years

Marcin K. Dyderski et al.

Summary: This study proposed a methodology for estimating forest biomass and biomass increment using forest inventory data from the Tatra National Park in the Western Carpathians from 1991 to 2006, revealing key predictors of aboveground stand biomass. The results showed that the primary drivers of forest biomass could be modified by geomorphic properties, highlighting their importance in mitigating negative climate change trends.

Day-Ahead Wind Power Forecasting in Poland Based on Numerical Weather Prediction

Bogdan Bochenek et al.

Summary: In the Polish power system, renewable energy sources like wind and solar energy play a growing role with high variability and low dispatchability. This study explores the prediction of day-ahead wind power at the national level in Poland using machine learning methods, achieving accuracy with a mean absolute percentage error of 26.7% and root mean square error of 4.5% for 2020. Seasonal and daily variations in prediction errors were observed, with higher errors in summer and daytime.

Both Cyclone-induced and Convective Storms Drive Disturbance Patterns in European Primary Beech Forests

J. L. Pettit et al.

Summary: Wind is the leading disturbance agent in European forests, with large-scale cyclones driving the majority of disturbance severity. However, small-scale convective storms also play a role, especially in localized effects. The prevalence and severity of cyclone-induced windstorms have increased over the 20th century, but the trajectory of Europe-wide windthrow remains uncertain.

Wind damage to forests and trees: a review with an emphasis on planted and managed forests

Barry Gardiner

Summary: This paper provides a review of the current understanding of wind damage to trees and forests, compares the state of knowledge with that from 50 years ago, discusses factors influencing wind damage risk, and explores spatial and temporal scales of wind damage processes. It also describes physical mechanisms of stem damage and uprooting, the development of wind damage risk models, and recommendations for future research.
