Environmental aspects of hormones estriol, 17β-estradiol and 17α-ethinylestradiol: Electrochemical processes as next-generation technologies for their removal in water matrices

Nadia Hortense Torres et al.

Summary: This review discusses the environmental scenario of hormones estriol (E3), 17 beta-estradiol (E2), and 17 alpha-ethinylestradiol (EE2), emphasizing their origins, characteristics, interactions, environmental dispersion, and the pathological and toxicological damage they cause. Studies on the treatment of these endocrine disruptors using electrochemical processes are highlighted, along with the detection of these micropollutants in various environmental matrices at concentrations capable of causing changes in the endocrine system of organisms. The review also emphasizes the importance of studying electrochemically-driven processes for the removal of emerging micropollutants in order to address the environmental concerns surrounding these hormones.

The 3Rs Principle in Animal Experimentation: A Legal Review of the State of the Art in Europe and the Case in Italy

Enrico Maestri

Summary: This paper aims to describe the key points of Italian and European legislation regarding the use of animals in biomedical experimentation, focusing on the 3Rs principles and the implementation of Directive 2010/63/EU in Italian legislation. It also discusses legal issues and cases of inadequate implementation, as well as examining the consistency of national legislation with the Directive and the debate surrounding animal testing.
