Hydrothermal pretreatment contributes to accelerate maturity during the composting of lignocellulosic solid wastes

Chengze Yu et al.

Summary: The study found that hydrothermal pretreatment in HTPAF can effectively degrade lignin and form a loose pore structure on the surface of chestnut shells, which is conducive to rapid compost maturation. Optimized process parameters can shorten the fermentation time of compost and present different characteristics in microbial communities compared to traditional composting.

Effect of hydrothermal treatment on organic matter degradation, phytotoxicity, and microbial communities in model food waste composting

Syazni Zainul Kamal et al.

Summary: Hydrothermal treatment (HTT) as a pretreatment for compost raw material has shown positive effects on food waste composting, including enhanced solubility of organic material, improved bioaugmentation, and reduced biohazard. HTT pretreatment resulted in less organic matter degradation and lower compost phytotoxicity compared to non-HTT-pretreated compost. High-throughput microbial community analysis revealed the dominance of Firmicutes and the presence of other bacterial groups in non-HTT-pretreated compost. Bacillus and Lysinibacillus were identified as the main contributors to food waste composting. HTT is advantageous for pretreating easily degradable food waste, leading to the production of compost with reduced phytotoxicity.

The co-addition of biochar and manganese ore promotes nitrous oxide reduction but favors methane emission in sewage sludge composting

Shunxi Zhou et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effects of biochar and manganese ore on N2O and CH4 emissions during sewage sludge composting. The results show that the co-addition of biochar and manganese ore can effectively reduce global warming potential and total nitrogen loss. The main mechanism for reducing N2O emissions is identified as the inhibition of N2O generation during nitrification and denitrification processes. Meanwhile, the reduced CH4 emissions are achieved by inhibiting CH4 generation and promoting CH4 consumption.

Life cycle GHG emissions of MSW landfilling versus Incineration: Expected outcomes based on US landfill gas collection regulations

Malak Anshassi et al.

Summary: Most LCA studies find MSWI to be preferred over landfilling from a GHG perspective due to high energy recovery offsets. However, there are cases where landfilling results in less GHG emissions. This study investigates the landfill gas collection efficiencies and waste composition that lead to such results, and explores the theoretical minimum lifetime gas collection efficiencies expected under US LFG regulations. The results show that only landfills with high LFG collection efficiencies and methane energy recovery can result in less GHG emissions compared to MSWI, and the required efficiency increases without LFG energy recovery. The study also models the expected theoretical lifetime LFG collection efficiencies and identifies the conditions under which a landfill can achieve such high efficiencies. The influence of factors such as oxidation rates, decay rates, electricity grids, and nonferrous metals recovery offsets on the collection efficiency range is explored, with electricity grids and nonferrous metals offsets having the greatest influence.

Summary: This study found that adding MS and PPM significantly reduced NH3 and N2O emissions, while PPG slightly increased N2O emissions. Different functional bacteria played key roles in nitrification and denitrification during different composting stages. PPM obtained the greatest reductions in NH3 and N2O release via the regulation of environmental variables, nitrogen functional genes, and the bacterial community.

Multi-functional biochar preparation and heavy metal immobilization by co-pyrolysis of livestock feces and biomass waste

Chunxing Li et al.

Summary: This study investigated the co-pyrolysis of livestock feces and various biomass wastes to prepare biochar, finding that wood chips and bamboo sawdust significantly influenced the biochar characteristics by reducing ash content and increasing heating value. Co-pyrolysis of manure with rice husk or chaff produced biochar with lower pH and electrical conductivity. Addition of certain biomass led to increased residual fractions of Cu and Zn in biochar, reducing environmental risks.
