Evaluation of the Potential of Single Particle ICP-MS for the Accurate Measurement of the Number Concentration of AuNPs of Different Sizes and Coatings

Antonio R. Montoro Bustos et al.

Summary: This paper presents a rigorous assessment of the capabilities of single particle inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (spICP-MS) for measuring the particle number concentration (PNC) of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) suspensions of different sizes and coatings. The results show that a good agreement between spICP-MS direct determination of PNC and reported PNCs can be obtained when reliable in-house Au mass fractions and thorough mean particle size determinations are included in the calculation of the derived PNCs.

Bioaccumulation and depuration of TiO2 nanoparticles by zebrafish through dietary exposure: Size- and number concentration-resolved analysis using single-particle ICP-MS

Hsin-Yi Lu et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the bioaccumulation and depuration of TiO2 nanoparticles (TiO(2)NPs) in zebrafish using single-particle ICP-MS (spICP-MS) analysis. The results showed that enzymatic digestion without excessive heating or H2O2 can successfully recover TiO2NP mass and number concentrations from fish tissue. The OECD Test Guideline 305 (OECD TG305) can be used to assess the bioaccumulation and depuration of TiO(2)NPs in fish. The traditional mass concentration metric may be applicable for representing the bioaccumulation potential of chemically inert NPs like TiO2.

Aquatic Mesocosm Strategies for the Environmental Fate and Risk Assessment of Engineered Nanomaterials

Andrea Carboni et al.

Summary: Mesocosms have emerged as a useful tool for studying the environmental impacts of engineered nanomaterials over the past decade. Study results show that mesocosm size, experiment duration, and indoor/outdoor location play major roles in defining the distribution of ENMs/metals. While benthic communities may face higher exposure levels, planktonic organisms are generally exposed to lower concentrations of potentially more reactive and toxic ENM species.

Analysis of complex particle mixtures by asymmetrical flow field-flow fractionation coupled to inductively coupled plasma time-of-flight mass spectrometry

Olga Meili-Borovinskaya et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates the advantages of coupling AF4 with ICP-TOFMS for characterizing composite particles, and the coupled system was used to characterize two complex particle mixtures. AF4 sizes of micro-alloyed steel particles were found to be larger than those determined by sp-ICP-TOFMS due to the presence of a surface coating. The increase in multi-angle light scattering and ICP-TOFMS signals of soil suspensions with spiked ENP concentrations could only be properly attributed after conducting element screening and single particle fingerprinting by ICP-TOFMS.
