Trends of banned pesticides and PCBs in different tissues of striped dolphins (Stenella coeruleoalba) stranded in the Northwestern Mediterranean reflect changing contamination patterns

Julien Dron et al.

Summary: Although organochlorine pesticides and PCBs have been banned for years, they continue to impact aquatic life, with dolphins being particularly exposed. Despite a slow decreasing trend in levels, the concentrations of toxic substances found in striped dolphins from 2010-2016 were still elevated compared to historical data, potentially due to a morbillivirus epidemic and remobilization of pollutants from contaminated soils and sediments. The changing patterns observed highlight the need for new efforts to reduce the dispersal of these contaminants into aquatic ecosystems.

Fugacity-Based Trophic Magnification Factors Characterize Bioaccumulation of Cyclic Methyl Siloxanes within an Urban Terrestrial Avian Food Web: Importance of Organism Body Temperature and Composition

Katharine M. Fremlin et al.

Summary: The study explored trophic magnification of cyclic volatile methyl siloxanes in a terrestrial food web in a mixed urban-agricultural landscape. While the trophic magnification factors derived from lipid normalized concentrations for D5 and D6 were similar to those in aquatic systems, the ones based on a fugacity basis were greater due to temperature-induced thermodynamic biomagnification when endothermic organisms consume poikilothermic organisms.

Mismatch Between Risk and Response May Amplify Lethal and Non-lethal Effects of Humans on Wild Animal Populations

Justine A. Smith et al.

Summary: Human activities have led to declines in animal populations globally through direct and indirect pathways, including numerical effects and non-lethal effects. Mismatches between the risk associated with anthropogenic stimuli and the response by wild animals amplify the lethal and non-lethal effects. Errors in detecting, assessing, and responding to different stimuli can affect individual fitness and population dynamics.

Bioaccumulation of DDT and other organochlorine pesticides in amphibians from two conservation areas within malaria risk regions of South Africa

Nico J. Wolmarans et al.

Summary: The study evaluated OCP accumulation in several anuran species from two conservation regions in South Africa and found that frogs in both regions were contaminated with OCPs. The exposure of non-target organisms to current use pesticides in conservation regions is strongly associated with proximity to sources.
