Bacterial synthesis of PbS nanocrystallites in one-step with l-cysteine serving as both sulfur source and capping ligand

Shiping Wei et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates the green bacterial biosynthesis of PbS nanocrystallites using l-cysteine-desulfurizing bacterium, with the resulting nanocrystals being cubic in structure, about 105 nm in size, and composed of numerous nanoparticles with a diameter of 5-10 nm. Surface characterization shows that l-cysteine coats the surface of PbS nanoparticles as a stabilizing ligand. Optical analysis reveals a blue shift in the band gap energy of the bacterial PbS particles compared to naturally occurring bulk PbS, indicating a quantum size effect.

Summary: This study investigated biota-MPs-EPS interactions in a mariculture pond, revealing differences in bacterial compositions between MPs and pond water and identifying potential opportunistic pathogens in the mariculture-associated MPs biofilm. The attachment of predominant EPS to MPs appeared to be reversible, and PE showed higher biomass and EPS content than PS and PLA, indicating pronounced variations in physicochemical properties. These findings provide insights into the seafood safety concern posed by MPs exposure in intensive mariculture, highlighting the importance of adopting efficient policies and technologies to reduce MPs for sustainable development.
