Vegetation effects on coastal foredune initiation: Wind tunnel experiments and field validation for three dune-building plants

Bianca Reo Charbonneau et al.

Summary: In this study, wind tunnel experiments were conducted to test how the morphology, density, and configuration of three foredune pioneer plant species influence dune initiation. Results showed that plant morphology, density, and configuration all impacted the resulting topography of dunes.

Spatiotemporal analysis of the impact of artificial beach structures on biogeomorphological processes in an arid beach-dune system

Summary: The study suggests that management decisions can have significant impacts on the environment, and the effects of decisions made in the 1970s and 1980s are still present today. Additionally, it reinforces the idea that management decisions based on scientific research can lead to more environmentally sustainable actions.

Decadalmonitoring of Traganum moquinii's role on foredune morphology of an human impacted arid dunefield

Levi Garcia-Romero et al.

Summary: The study focused on the eco-anthropogenic evolution of foredunes in the arid Canary Islands, analyzing the morphology and distribution of Traganum moquinii species. Significant decadal changes in the number and distribution of T. moquinii plants were observed, with the influence of human activities playing a role in these changes. The research provides insights on the management of foredunes in arid regions, highlighting the impact of human actions on the geomorphological processes of these ecosystems.

Nebkha or not? -Climate control on foredune mode

Patrick A. Hesp et al.

Summary: This study investigates the mode of foredune development along the west African and the Canary Islands coasts, finding that rainfall is the principal driver determining foredune mode. Continuous foredunes occur in regions with rainfall above 480-500 mm annually, while below 300 mm only discrete dune mounds are present, dominated by xerophilous and halophilous shrub plants. The findings highlight the significant role of climate, particularly rainfall, in driving foredune mode and coastal morphological evolution.

Nebkha development and sediment supply

Patrick A. Hesp et al.

Summary: This study explores the influence of sediment supply on the formation and spatial patterns of nebkhas in coastal dunefields of arid northwest Africa and the Canary Islands. Results demonstrate that sediment supply plays a major role in nebkha development, affecting both the number and size of nebkhas. The data presented provide two indicators that may be applicable to other dune systems, offering insights into aeolian sedimentary activity and sediment supply.
