A collaborative serious game for water resources planning and hazard mitigation

A. Teague et al.

Summary: Hydrological hazards pose various risks to society, economy, and environment, making it necessary to adopt holistic watershed master planning and involve the watershed community in decision-making processes. Decision-makers face challenges in dealing with high-volume, high-variety data as well as in incorporating elements of social learning and relationship building. A serious gaming framework called Multi-Hazard Tournament (MHT) is introduced to assist stakeholders in evaluating adaptation options for water-related hazards and developing mitigation strategies, ultimately increasing collective awareness and understanding of these hazards.

An ethical decision-making framework with serious gaming: a smart water case study on flooding

Gregory Ewing et al.

Summary: Sensors and control technologies are being deployed at unprecedented levels in water environments, leading to higher-resolution monitoring and decision making. Humans are ceding decision-making powers to decision-support technologies, challenging water resources management tools to incorporate ethical and normative expectations. The proposed Water Ethics Web Engine (WE) framework integrates voting-based ethical preferences into decision support, demonstrating the ability to capture group 'wisdom' for decision making.

Real-Time Flood Mapping on Client-Side Web Systems Using HAND Model

Anson Hu et al.

Summary: The height above nearest drainage (HAND) model is frequently used for calculating soil properties and predicting flood inundation extents. It is advantageous for its high accuracy, short runtime, and independence from prior data. The model in Iowa has shown comparable inundation maps to advanced hydrodynamic models, making it a valuable tool in the absence of detailed hydrological data.
