Peroxymonosulfate activation by a metal-free biochar for sulfonamide antibiotic removal in water and associated bacterial community composition

Chang-Mao Hung et al.

Summary: The antibiotic sulfamethoxazole (SMX) commonly found in water can be effectively removed by metal-free pristine coconut-shell-derived biochar (CSBC) through activating peroxymonosulfate (PMS). The activation of PMS by CSBC leads to the degradation of SMX through a combination of radical and nonradical reaction pathways, showing high efficiency in removing sulfonamide antibiotics from aqueous environments.

Effects of biochar on catalysis treatment of 4-nonylphenol in estuarine sediment and associated microbial community structure

Chang-Mao Hung et al.

Summary: The study found that sewage sludge biochar (SSB) synthesized at 500 degrees Celsius (SSB500) achieved the highest efficiency in degrading 4-nonylphenol (4-NP), activating sodium percarbonate (SPC) to produce sufficient active oxygen and carbonate ions for enhanced degradation. Treatment with SSB/SPC increased microbial diversity and richness in sediments, with specific bacterial genera playing crucial roles in 4-NP degradation.

The degradation of di-(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate, DEHP, in sediments using percarbonate activated by seaweed biochars and its effects on the benthic microbial community

Chang-Mao Hung et al.

Summary: Research utilizing red seaweed-derived biochar to activate sodium percarbonate (SPC) for the degradation of DEHP in contaminated estuarine surface sediments revealed that increasing the SPC dosage and using a pyrolysis temperature of 300-900 degrees Celsius can enhance DEHP removal. RSB900 was found to be the most effective SPC activator, achieving a 63% total DEHP degradation rate within 12 hours under optimal pH conditions. Treatment with RSB-SPC also significantly increased bacterial abundance in sediment ecosystems.

Degradation of organic contaminants in marine sediments by peroxymonosulfate over LaFeO3 nanoparticles supported on water caltrop shell-derived biochar and the associated microbial community responses

Chang-Mao Hung et al.

Summary: The LFBC/PMS process enhances the biological richness and diversity of sediment ecosystems, leading to changes in the bacterial community. Under optimal conditions, LFBC/PMS treatment can degrade 90% of total PAHs in 24 hours, with degradation efficiency for 2-, 3-, 4-, 5-, and 6-ring PAHs at 52%, 61%, 66%, 56%, and 29% respectively. The Langmuir-Hinshelwood equation successfully predicts the PAHs degradation kinetics over LFBC by PMS.
