Human biomonitoring results of contaminant and nutrient biomarkers in Old Crow, Yukon, Canada

Mallory Drysdale et al.

Summary: Several large-scale human biomonitoring projects, including the First Nations Biomonitoring Initiative, have been conducted in Canada, but a study in the northern Yukon community of Old Crow filled a data gap by providing baseline levels of contaminant and nutrient biomarkers in 2019. While levels of lead, cadmium, and mercury were generally below health-based guidance values, elevated levels of certain contaminants were observed compared to the general Canadian population, which may be useful for evaluating international initiatives aimed at reducing contaminant burden in the Arctic.

Time Trend of Persistent Organic Pollutants and Metals in Greenlandic Inuit during 1994-2015

Manhai Long et al.

Summary: Research has shown a decreasing trend in regulated POPs and metals but a potential increasing trend in nonregulated PFASs in the Greenlandic Inuit population. Continual monitoring of contaminants is crucial for protecting the health of Arctic populations.

Prenatal exposure to persistent organic pollutants and metals and problematic child behavior at 3-5 years of age: a Greenlandic cohort study

Summary: This study found a significant association between prenatal organochlorine pesticide exposure and problematic behavior in 3-5 year old children, with no consistent evidence of associations between polychlorinated biphenyls, perfluoroalkylated substances, and heavy metals.

Time trends of perfluoroalkyl substances in blood in 30-year old Norwegian men and women in the period 1986-2007

Vivian Berg et al.

Summary: The study found that between 1986 and 2001, there was an overall increase in blood concentrations of PFASs in men and women of reproductive age, followed by a decrease until 2007. However, longer chained PFASs were still increasing in 2007. Comparisons between 30-year-old men and older men within the same population showed different time trends in the exact same years.

Dietary habits among men and women in West Greenland: follow-up on the ACCEPT birth cohort

Maria Wielsoe et al.

Summary: This study followed up on the dietary habits of pregnant women and children's fathers in Greenland, showing a transition towards higher intake of imported western food. Factors such as gender, living town, age, socioeconomic status, and lifestyle were found to significantly influence dietary patterns. The results may be used to target future food recommendations for relevant population groups.

Biomarkers of poly- and perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in Sub-Arctic and Arctic communities in Canada

Joshua Garcia-Barrios et al.

Summary: PFAS levels are decreasing in southern Canada but increasing in the Arctic due to long-range transport. Male participants had higher concentrations than females, and concentrations tended to increase with age. Except for PFNA, PFAS levels in northern regions were similar or lower than those in the general Canadian population and other First Nations populations.

Polychlorinated dioxins, furans (PCDD/Fs) and dioxin-like polychlorinated biphenyls (dl-PCBs) in food from Italy: Estimates of dietaryintake and assessment

Grazia Barone et al.

Summary: The study investigated dietary intake of polychlorinated dioxins and furans (PCDD/Fs) and dioxin-like polychlorinated biphenyls (dl-PCBs) among different sex/age groups of the Italian population. Variations in concentrations of PCDD/Fs and dl-PCBs in different food matrices were observed, with fish and seafood showing the highest levels and pork loin samples exceeding EU food law standards. The importance of controlling contaminants in fishery products, particularly in fish, was emphasized as a key exposure source for consumers.

Anthropometric measures and blood pressure of Greenlandic preschool children

Magnus Kok Grouleff et al.

Summary: The study describes anthropometric data and blood pressure measures of Greenlandic preschool children, showing differences between genders, and effects of maternal smoking during pregnancy on child development. Overweight and obesity prevalence was higher than previously reported, with significant differences in various measurements between boys and girls.
