Analysis of microplastics of a broad size range in commercially important mussels by combining FTIR and Raman spectroscopy approaches

B. N. Vinay Kumar et al.

Summary: The study aimed to detect, quantify, and estimate microplastic contamination in globally distributed commercially important mussels, using a combination of spectroscopic methods. By optimizing sample purification methods and implementing a random forest classification approach, the researchers were able to rapidly and accurately generate data on microplastic abundance and size distributions.

Microplastics accumulate to thin layers in the stratified Baltic Sea

Emilia Uurasjarvi et al.

Summary: In the Baltic Sea, water stratification creates thin layers where microplastics, mainly consisting of polyethylene, polypropylene, and polyethylene terephthalate, accumulate. Sampling from deep water layers in addition to surface waters is necessary to obtain a comprehensive overview of the abundance of microplastics in stratified water bodies. The density of microplastics did not show a trend with sampling depth, likely due to the effects of biofilm formation on sinking rates.

Consistent determination of the heating rate of light-absorbing aerosol using wavelength- and time-dependent Aethalometer multiple-scattering correction

L. Ferrero et al.

Summary: Accurate and temporally consistent measurements of light absorbing aerosol heating rate and its source apportionment and speciation are necessary for evaluating short-term climate forcing. Different reference devices or approaches may lead to overestimation of the heating rate, highlighting the need for further studies on the influence of wavelength corrections.

Microplastics in glaciers of the Tibetan Plateau: Evidence for the long-range transport of microplastics

Yulan Zhang et al.

Summary: Microplastics have been detected in glacier surface snow on the Tibetan Plateau, indicating long-distance transport of microplastics to the region. This evidence is significant for understanding the atmospheric transport of microplastics to the Tibetan Plateau and provides a global perspective on the microplastic cycle.

Atmospheric deposition of microplastics in the coastal zone: Characteristics and relationship with meteorological factors

Karolina Szewc et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the quantitative and qualitative compositions of microplastics deposited from the atmosphere in the coastal zone, and investigated the links with meteorological factors. The deposited microplastics were predominantly fibers, with smaller size classes dominating and mainly originating from textiles, packaging materials, and fishing gear. Air mass trajectory analysis showed that microplastics deposited in Gdynia mainly came from local sources.

COVID-19 salivary Raman fingerprint: innovative approach for the detection of current and past SARS-CoV-2 infections

C. Carlomagno et al.

Summary: The study presents a Raman-based approach for analyzing saliva to differentiate signals from COVID-19 patients and others, demonstrating high accuracy, precision, sensitivity, and specificity in classifying patient signals. By developing a deep learning model, the discrimination of patient signals is translated to the patient level with an accuracy range of 89-92%. These findings suggest the potential of a Raman-based diagnostic tool using saliva as a minimally invasive and highly informative biofluid.

The impact of cloudiness and cloud type on the atmospheric heating rate of black and brown carbon in the Po Valley

Luca Ferrero et al.

Summary: The impact of cloud fraction and cloud type on the heating rate (HR) of black and brown carbon (HRBC and HRBrC) was experimentally quantified. The HR of light-absorbing aerosol decreased significantly in low cloudiness and completely overcast conditions compared to clear-sky conditions. Different cloud types had varying degrees of suppression on HRBC and HRBrC, with stratocumulus and altostratus clouds showing the highest impact.
