Iron isotope of suspended particulate matter in Zhujiang River, Southwest China: Characteristics, sources, and environmental implications

Guilin Han et al.

Summary: Understanding the environmental iron cycle influenced by natural and anthropogenic processes is crucial for obtaining key information on earth-surface evolution. This study investigated the iron isotopic and elemental compositions of suspended particulate matter in the Zhujiang River, providing insights into the earth-surface iron cycle. The findings suggest that chemical weathering is not the primary factor influencing the delta Fe-56 values of SPM, and anthropogenic iron inputs are limited. Additionally, the study demonstrates the importance of clay minerals and heavy minerals in the composition of SPM, and provides quantitative references for understanding the distinct delta Fe-56 values of oceans.

Dissolved iron and isotopic geochemical characteristics in a typical tropical river across the floodplain: The potential environmental implication

Guilin Han et al.

Summary: Iron (Fe) is an essential element for terrestrial and aquatic organisms, and understanding the aquatic iron cycle and geochemical characteristics is important for earth-surface evolution. The stable iron isotopic composition in the Mun River shows a primary contribution from rock weathering and a secondary contribution from urban activities. The correlations between delta Fe-56 and Fe, Al, and physicochemical parameters can be used to distinguish different iron sources in river water.
