Sustainable remediation of hazardous environmental pollutants using biochar-based nanohybrid materials

Yuping Zhao et al.

Summary: Biochar is a carbon material with diverse functionalities and excellent physicochemical characteristics, showing high potential in removing harmful organic compounds. It is produced through pyrolysis of renewable feedstocks and applied across different industries. The characteristics and construction of biochar-based materials vary, with the addition of nanoscale reinforcements enhancing their pollutant removal capabilities.

Contrasting pathways of carbon sequestration in paddy and upland soils

Xiangbi Chen et al.

Summary: Rice soils have a higher efficiency in organic carbon sequestration, influenced by climate and land use types. Plant-derived organic carbon contributes the most under moderate temperatures and neutral soil conditions, while microbial-derived organic carbon is enhanced under high temperatures and low soil pH conditions.

A paradigm shift to CO2 sequestration to manage global warming - With the emphasis on developing countries

Siddhartha Shankar Bhattacharyya et al.

Summary: Global land use changes to meet the food demands of a growing population are turning agricultural soils into carbon sources. Effective agricultural management practices are crucial to offset anthropogenic carbon emissions, with carbon sequestration in agriculture being a viable option. Agroforestry is seen as the most promising approach, while strategies like no-tillage are considered less advantageous.

Accumulation of organic compounds in paddy soils after biochar application is controlled by iron hydroxides

Yucui Bi et al.

Summary: Soil acidity plays a crucial role in influencing the transformation and accumulation of organic matter. A four-year column experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of biochar on soil organic matter accumulation in acidic and alkaline soils. Biochar application increased the aromatic carbon content in the soil organic matter, leading to enhanced carbon content in both soils. The study found that the transformation of Fe (hydr)oxide in soil organic matter pools also plays a key role in organic matter accumulation after biochar application.

Soil carbon sequestration efficiency under continuous paddy rice cultivation and excessive nitrogen fertilization in South China

Yueming Hu et al.

Summary: The study reveals that despite increased application of nitrogen fertilizers and straw incorporation, the SOC sequestration rate in continuous paddy soils was only 0.021 g C kg(-1) yr(-1) over 37 years, while new paddy soils developed from uplands had a rate of 0.145 g C kg(-1) yr(-1, indicating a declining trend in SOC sequestration efficiency over time with rice cultivation.

Nutrient Budgeting - A Robust Indicator of Soil-Water-Air Contamination Monitoring and Prevention

Siddhartha Shankar Bhattacharyya et al.

Summary: Nutrient budgeting techniques are essential in monitoring and preventing SWA contamination, helping to protect the ecosystem by limiting excess nutrients. Factors such as excessive fertilizer and manure use, low nutrient utilization efficiency, atmospheric deposition, and agricultural management practices can impact nutrient balance estimation. Sustainable policies and global coordinated actions are necessary to integrate different NB approaches for effective SWA contamination prevention.
