Combining Radar and Optical Satellite Imagery with Machine Learning to Map Lava Flows at Mount Etna and Fogo Island

Claudia Corradino et al.

Summary: Mapping lava flow has direct relevance to volcanic hazards and satellite remote sensing techniques, such as optical and radar data, are complementary sources that can be used effectively for lava flow mapping. Combining both radar and optical imagery improves the accuracy and reliability of lava flow mapping, highlighting the importance of fully exploiting the potential of complementary satellite sensors during volcanic eruptions.

Comparison of In Situ and Remote-Sensing Methods to Determine Turbidity and Concentration of Suspended Matter in the Estuary Zone of the Mzymta River, Black Sea

Ksenia Nazirova et al.

Summary: The paper compares water turbidity and suspended particulate matter concentration obtained from in situ and satellite remote-sensing data, demonstrating that with the right algorithm, these values can adequately reflect the real situation, even with standard retrieval algorithms. Special algorithms may be needed for high correlation in specific conditions, like in spring flooding.

Atmospheric correction of Sentinel-3/OLCI data for mapping of suspended particulate matter and chlorophyll-a concentration in Belgian turbid coastal waters

Quinten Vanhellemont et al.

Summary: Different atmospheric correction algorithms for OLCI on Sentinel-3 were evaluated for retrieval of water-leaving radiance reflectance, chlorophyll-a concentration, and turbidity in turbid coastal waters. ACOLITE and L2-WFR showed the best performance in the 442-681 nm bands, while algorithms assuming a water reflectance model, like POLYMER and C2RCC, were less suitable for processing imagery over turbid coastal waters.

Trial of Chemical Composition Estimation Related to Submarine Volcano Activity Using Discolored Seawater Color Data Obtained from GCOM-C SGLI. A Case Study of Nishinoshima Island, Japan, in 2020

Yuji Sakuno

Summary: This study developed a relational equation between the RGB value of discolored seawater around a submarine volcano and its chemical composition using XYZ colorimetric system, and examined the relation to volcanic activity at Nishinoshima Island, Japan in 2020 using GCOM-C SGLI data. The results showed a significant correlation between seawater color and chemical composition, particularly the ratio of (Fe + Al)/Si, which fluctuated significantly just before the volcanic activity became active. The study suggests that estimating chemical composition of discolored seawater using SGLI data may be a powerful tool in predicting submarine volcanic activity.

Submarine landslides triggered by iceberg collision with the seafloor

Alexandre Normandeau et al.

Summary: This article discusses how iceberg gouging of continental slopes can lead to submarine landslides, even far from the iceberg source region. By analyzing an event in a Baffin Island fjord, it is shown that icebergs can affect the seafloor at depths greater than their keel depth, triggering submarine landslides. The findings suggest that icebergs from the Arctic, Greenland, and Antarctica can pose hazards thousands of kilometers away and impact continental slopes by initiating submarine landslides, particularly with increased iceberg discharge due to climate change.

Assessing the Use of Optical Satellite Images to Detect Volcanic Impacts on Glacier Surface Morphology

Michael Dieter Martin et al.

Summary: This study investigates the potential of using optical satellite images to detect volcanic impacts on glaciers, aiming to improve glacier-clad volcano monitoring and eruption forecasting by analyzing glacier surface morphology changes. The study found that the most common volcanic impacts on glacier morphology include ice cauldrons, ice bulging, and localized crevassing, highlighting the importance of utilizing a combination of optical satellite images and other sources for optimal monitoring and eruption prediction at glacier-clad volcanoes.
