Operational load enhancement for an anaerobic membrane bioreactor through ethanol fermentation pretreatment of food waste

Jin Sun et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the performance of ethanol fermentation pretreatment (EP) for food waste in achieving high-load anaerobic digestion operation using an anaerobic membrane bioreactor (AnMBR). By increasing the organic loading rate (OLR) and maintaining a low propionic acid accumulation, the methane content in biogas was significantly improved. Additionally, the study showed that primary methanogens were tolerant to ammonia inhibition, leading to improved buffering capacity at high load, and identified the abundance of hydrogenotrophic methanogens in AnMBR through 16S rRNA sequence analysis. The results suggest that the EP contributes to creating a virtuous cycle by maintaining a lower hydrogen partial pressure and achieving ultra-high load in the system.

Microbial dynamics during anaerobic digestion of sewage sludge combined with food waste at high organic loading rates in immersed membrane bioreactors

Shiyi Qin et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the microbial profiling of anaerobic digestion during the processing of sewage sludge and food waste to volatile fatty acids in an immersed membrane bioreactor with different organic loading rates. Firmicutes and Actinobacteria were dominant at specific OLR levels, while Clostridium and Lactobacillus genera were responsible for higher yields of acetate, butyrate, caproate, and lactate. The bacterial community was dominated by the Firmicutes phylum and Clostridium sp. W14A species, indicating a lower population of acetogenic bacteria associated with greater VFAs generation.

Enhanced water and energy recovery from anaerobic osmotic membrane bioreactors treating waste activated sludge based on the draw solution concentration and temperature regulation

Tianyu Gao et al.

Summary: Anaerobic osmotic membrane bioreactors (AnOMBRs) have great potential for water and energy recovery, with performance being influenced by draw solution (DS) concentrations and temperatures. Optimal results for treating low-strength waste activated sludge were achieved at a DS concentration of 0.75 M, with higher concentrations causing membrane fouling and decreased methanogen activity. The study showed that specific methanogenic activity was suppressed under higher DS concentrations, controlling the performance of AnOMBR to some extent.
